Supposedly they charge you only if someone clicked on the "promotion" or the "ad" and then purchased it.   But I don't know where these ads appear, except perhaps on the home page.   If they appear through searches, or what.  It looks like it's designed for people selling many small priced items, like purses or watches or whatever, but I can't be sure.

I have never used but as a buyer when I run searches, sometimes I get promoted listings and they are obviously on top - they annoy me and I just scroll past them but that's just me.

I do know that if you search for example "Beanie Babies" up will pop "Beanie Babies" under "Best Match" with any "sponsored" items at the very top.  As soon as you change "Best Match" to say "Most Recent" then I believe the "Sponsored" item gets slotted in to its appropriate place i.e. not the very first listing as it was under the "Best Match" search.
