Jokerman's Chicago Con experience

Hi Everybody--

After much hemming and hawing, I finally decided to hit the WWC

on Sunday and boy am I glad I did. I've only been back in to collecting

for the last year and a half or so and hadn't been to a convention since

the '80's. Some things have changed! I couldn't believe the size of the place

and knew there was no way I'd be able to see it all in five hours, so I did my

best to find some of the dealers I've seen recommended on the boards.

After my first lap around the dealer's area, I came across Ted from Superworld's

booth I looked through his stuff and tried not to drool on the books. Being indecisive

and overwhelmed I decided to walk around some more before buying anything. I

checked out Harley Yee's and Metropolis (who had at least 12 ASM #1's on hand)

and several other booths before I felt like buying some books.

When I decided to head back to Superworld, I kid you not I could not find their booth!

Finally after minutes of circling around I found it and bought some nice

books from Ted. I picked up a Sub-Mariner #48 (Great Gil Kane Dr. Doom cover).

also an X-Men #141 an ASM #238 and this DD #82 with another great Kane cover!

Then I came across our very own Moondog who was relaxing with his daughter

behind his table and after rifling through his boxes I came away with a bunch of

great books. I found a Wonder Woman #200, Strange Adventures #208,

Captain Action #5 ( yes, I love Gil Kane!) and this Swamp Thing #7 ....

I then remembered how Motor City helped out Mark (esquirecomics) during

the Wonder Woman #20 theft and decided to buy a few books from them for

being upstanding guys. I picked up a sweet FF #175 (Kirby Galactus cover),

an ASM #113 and a DD #85 (with a sweet cover by....Gil Kane). thumbsup2.gif

I didn't bring any checklists with me, and since I was going on memory alone

I decided I'd plug some holes in my ASM run. I had already picked up a couple

books I knew I needed and saw a few more at Comic Book Addiction from Canada.

I got a #122 and this #100. two keys I've been missing!

Suddenly it was after 4:00 and some folks were starting to pack up and though

I could have browsed all night, the con was almost over. I didn't get the name

of the older gentelman I made my last purchases with but after flipping through

his boxes I found myself holding a nice Conan #16 and this classic.....

He gave me a funny look as I handed them to him... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

All in all I had a great time and was very happy with what I bought and the whole

spectacle. I didn't even really see Artist's Alley or the DC or Marvel displays...

Next year I've got to go for the whole thing.... And I've heard tell of a Forum Dinner too....
