Are scans/pics good enough for CGC in the event of damage?

I am, in no way, predicting (or expecting) any damage to occur to my books while in their possession. I have never, ever had this happen to me (knock on wood), however, we've all heard stories. In the event something bad does happen, are 'before' pics good enough? For those who've had their books damaged (and downgraded for it), were there ever any problems with the 'before' pics not being good enough? It seems like CGC could say "How do we know that's the same book?" and they'd be in their rights to ask this.

I'm not trying to be negative...just making sure I CMA.
