Tampered Slab?

Hi there,

I purchase CGC because it provides me a level on trust in grading
I recently purchased a slabbed comic (9.6) from eBay.

The Seller provided images and an accurate description showing creases. Many have been vocal that these creases could not occur after encapsulation and believe CGC would not offer a grade of 9.6. with them.
This has lead me to wonder if the slab has been tampered with. Can you provide any assistance or advice, would you have a record of the grading to match against the serial number?

Anything you can do to help is appreciated.

Kind regards,

Mark

Good morning, thanks for your message.  You can actually check any book on our website by entering the certification number from the label into our certification lookup feature and it will bring up all of that particular book's information.  In this case, it does appear that it was graded a 9.6.

It is unlikely that the book was ever cracked out and tampered with as you would definitely see signs of that on the holder.  It would be pretty much impossible to reseal a holder once a book was cracked out of it.

If you feel the book was overgraded, you could always send it in to us for an appearance review and we can have our graders review the book.  You can contact our customer service department for more information at submissions@cgccomics.com or by phone at 877-662-6642.

Thank you!

I suspect that the graders evaluated that crease on the back cover, and likely the one at FC Right as well, to be printing creases -- defects in the paper used to print the comic, or that arise during the printing process itself -- rather than handling creases. Manufacturing defects are either not penalized, or are penalized less steeply than damage from handling at all but the very highest grades. There are more than a few 9.8s with printing creases, and some comics are more prone to them than others.

On the other hand, the FC UL of this comic is an actual defect, and is almost certainly what got it lowered to a 9.6.
