In my opinion, the most significant defect is not the spine stress but the quarter-circle bend/crease at the bottom-right corner of the front cover (which is also visible at the bottom-left corner of the back cover). The effect of this blemish can be minimized (or possibly eliminated) with a skillful cleaning/pressing (although I'm not sure the book's value justifies the added expense).
