Hmm. You may be right here. I assumed it was almost popped.

Probably not. But then it depends on how the grader reads it. Maybe because of a manufacturers defect, it couldn't go past a certain grade. ike if it was an obvious 9.4, it couldn't reach higher than an 8.5. To me, I don't see a tear where 2/3rds of the top part of the staple has gone back through the paper. Just a dot and an impression where it tried to get through and failed.

Seems to me there were a bunch of Batman 222's that had the same issue. Many I have seen graded denoted "Top Staple Detached From Centerfold". Saw enough where I conclude it's a manufacturers defect.

Either way, you have a real nice copy of a very coveted book, there.
