I have a tiny rip at the top of the cover and a cchip missing about the size of a half tic - tac on the bottom right of the cover the rest of the book is perfectly fine. Are those two things gonna remarkabley drop the score? X-men #9

Welcome To The Boards!!!

Just stating that "The rest of the book is fine" does not help boardies to help you.

You need to post pics of the book (front/rear covers. edges/corners, spine/staples, inside front/rear covers/splash page, centerfold).

I would suggest you post this in the "Hey Buddy, Can You Spare a Grade" section.

Here are the grading standards if you choose to grade the book yourself.

Thanks for those links. I had not seen these grading notes before - they are more informative than the CGC ones. It seems to me that people responding in the PGM forum grade books more harshly than the HA notes would indicate.

I have found from this forum, that the masses tend to get it right a LOT of the time. At the very least, they get the range right. If majority of the forumnites here predict grades in the 5.0-6.0 range, CGC tends to agree. Very rarely is there a book where people are all over the map. It can happen but if 10 people here see a 7.0, 3 see a 7.5 and 2 see an 8.0, I am calling it a 7.0 maybe 7.5 to be safe.

Of course, truth (assuming CGC is truth) will not be told until they see it....

Every defect will drop the grade. So yes. Your best bet though since we can't see the book is for you to post some pictures in this part of the boards https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/forum/42-hey-buddy-can-you-spare-a-grade/

I don't think so since the HA standards are the same industry standards we all use, including CGC as a base. And HA is pretty harsh, check the bit about where a detached centrefold is allowed (at either 1 or two staples) or subscription creases. If you find an example of us judging more harshly please share.

i meant "more informative" as it actually provides some useful description and examples.

For example, here is 9.0 from HA via the above link:

9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM):  Back to Top
Nearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. Very minor foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Only the slightest staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible. Paper is off-white to cream and supple. Very minor interior tears may be present.

Compared to CGC's description for 9.0:

https://www.cgccomics.com/grading/grading-scale/

"A very well-preserved collectible with good eye appeal. There will be a number of minor handling and/or manufacturing defects".

Regarding harsher grading, from what I have seen in the PGM threads, the presence of ANY stress lines (not just "a very minor accumulation") seem to get grades down to 7.5 or lower. But maybe I have not seen enough examples yet.
