mnaz1988
What would the grade be on this guy? I bought him a few years ago and now I’m considering trying to sell it. I always assumed no matter how good the rest of the book looks, a detached cover would be an automatic 0.5 poor. Thanks - Mike Galen130
The Lions Den
A book with a cover that's completely split usually gets a grade of .5 Edited April 26, 2021 by The Lions Den MPH1964

Popular Post zzutak
I'm not sure there's a more hotly debated defect than the detached and completely split cover. Why? Because you can find CGC-certified examples with Universal (Blue Label) Grades of 0.5 PR, 1.0 FR, and 1.5 FR/PR. My personal feeling is that a book with a detached and completely split cover should receive a grade of 1.0 FR if the front/back covers are still "all there" (or close to it), and a grade of 0.5 PR if a significant amount of material is missing along the spine or from either cover. I believe most of CGC's grading staff shares my view -- with one key exception: major keys in this condition will often (but not always) receive a higher grade of 1.5 FR/GD. As usual, I have receipts. CGC 0.5 PR: CGC 1.0 FR: CGC 1.5 PR/FR My own feeling is that flaws like a missing page, a stripped logo (the classic "remaindered" copy), or a detached and completely split cover should all be treated as absolute benchmarks, not subject to different interpretations by different graders, and not subject to value-dependent penalties. The brutal reality of our world, though, is that justice is not truly blind. A ridiculously valuable mega-key will often be graded a bit more leniently than an ordinary/non-key issue. And, yes, I realize this rather lengthy lesson is much, much more than you asked for. The Lions Den, Cliff R., Point Five and 2 others 4
KCOComics
I think that one gets a .5 Great book though! Love those early Hulks!

Love the gallery you've got here! Agree with the above 100%. I see no reason this Hulk should be .5 and not 1.0.

Comparing a Golden Age Superman 1, Detective 27 and Batman1 to the Silver Age Hulk 6 is kind of like comparing my house to the Burj Khalifa because they both have windows. Or my 1979 Chrysler Cordoba (with Corinthian Leather) to a 2021 McLaren Artura because they both have at least 3 wheels. They are not the same! There's a certain leniency granted to older books and perhaps especially, key books. While I could sit and stare lovingly at your treasures, I wonder if this were an Amazing Spider-Man #37 (or, insert some suitably vanilla book) with a detached cover, would it get the bump to 1.0?
