In THR's recent listing of Hollywood's top entertainment lawyers was the news that Danai Gurira had signed a deal to "not only reprise her role as Okoye in the upcoming Black Panther sequel but also in an origin spinoff series for Disney+." Nothing has been confirmed by Marvel or Disney just yet, but other outlets (such as Collider) have confirmed it for themselves. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Okoye is the General of the Dora Milaje, the elite organization of women who serve as Wakanda's special forces. THR's mention of the series being an origin story is interesting; perhaps it will chart Okoye's rise to the top of the Dora Milaje?

The Wakanda Disney+ series will be developed by Black Panther director/co-writer Ryan Coogler, who is also returning for BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER.

"Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation," said Disney's Bob Iger when the project was announced. "With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful, and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team." As far as the Black Panther sequel goes, production on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is gearing up to kick off later this year, but after the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, it remains to be seen how it will address Boseman's character of T'Challa. The film is set for a July 8, 2022 release.

They messed up the report on AV Club by confusing Okoye with Ayo and saying Okoye had "recently appeared on Falcon & Winter Soldier" which.... yeah, not the best reporting today. They've since amended it.

I don't even want to go deep into why that 'confusion' happened

Even though the timeline has been pushed back, it seems that the same conversations that led to this new restructuring of Phase 4 have included the greenlight on several new projects. According to The GWW, in 2023, Marvel will begin production on a Thunderbolts film adaptation along with the previously announced Fantastic Four movie. They are also reportedly moving forward on a Shang-Chi 2 (no surprise after Shang-Chi obliterated pandemic box office records) and a Black Panther: Wakanda Forever spinoff series featuring Danai Gurira as Okoye.

Marvel Studios is reportedly moving forward with a Black Panther: Wakanda Forever spin-off series centered on Danai Gurira's Okoye. The Dora Milaje General made her cinematic debut in Ryan Coogler's Oscar-winning 2018 Marvel Cinematic Universe as a close ally to Chadwick Boseman's titular hero and the wife of Daniel Kaluuya's W'Kabi. Gurira would reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame as well as the animated Disney+ series What If...?.

Gurira is currently filming her latest performance as the character in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, returning alongside co-stars Lupita Nyong'o, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett. Development on the MCU sequel was initially hampered by the loss of Boseman to colon cancer, with plot details now being kept under wraps for the film. While production is expected to last until late November, word may have already broken about Gurira's future in the MCU.
