Yo Lighthouse, How Many 35-Centers Ya Got?

42 posts in this topic

Somebody stop me! Or at least give me one reason why I shouldn't list my 35-centers?

Because the full set is now more attainable with folks selling. I just got an email, along with oher 35 cent collectors that they will list 2 Ms. Marvel variants during the X-Men 2 release to coincide with listing first app of Mystique.

I just sent my 35's in for grading - about 18 of them to see where they stand. I just compiled a handy top census grades for the 30 centers, will finish up with the 35 cents ones. There were plenty of 30 cent variant issues that did not have one graded copy up yet, even some errors as pointed out by donut and silverandbronze in the marketplace thread.

JC - now's a good time to get rid of your 35 cent dupes and use the $$$ to find more! tongue.gif

Any chance of posting the list Darth?

It sure would be interesting to see it. IF you are prepared to share your good work that is. tongue.gif

I'm not really concerned about the money, but the fact that I could blow off some copies, and then translate that into some comics that I really appreciate.

Great idea - have you contributed full disclosure of your stash to Paul's website yet?

I mean, a GOOD 35-center almost hits $100, some copies with names scrawled on them and coupons filled in, hit the same levels.

I remember when the 35 centers that went for all 96.01 across the board on ebay in the past two weeks were ones I lost on in the Jan 2003 Heritage Auctions...and they sold for much less there.

WTF would happen if I listed some prime material right now?

Knowing your grading and you, I'd guess unslabbed 35 cent X-men may get up to $150 even in GOOD; NM raw - $300; slabbed NM...don't want to think about it tongue.gif

If you do list, make sure you "spam" the 35 cent big boys and let them all fight it out...or slab it and sell through Heritage (or have them press and slab it!) wink.gif

There seem to be around half a dozen rabid collectors of 30 & 35 cent variants bidding on ebay autions at the moment. Definately a good time to sell.

Half dozen and growing - at least for the 30 centers. I'm seeing more and more new names turn up that are not on my list of "regulars" I'm also getting PM's wondering if I'm bidding heavy or not. I point them to my needs list in the Marketplace Forum and let em figure it out if they want it bad enough. I've let a few slip by (Jungle Action and Sully's CGC 9.6 DD 132 var - still hurts that my $500 bid did not snipe that frown.gif )

Even the easier variants have been going for $35-50 in VF and above. Don't see too many high grade auctions, but those I have seen are clearing $100 on 30 centers.

Like I said earliewr, I was checking the census on high grade copies and there is still that mentality present on having the highest graded copy, now it is being applied on the already scarce 30 centers...

Darth, just a quick one on your high census list.

I'm pretty sure there was an IF 5 or 6 (can't remember which) in cgc 9.6 up on ebay this week. You might want to update the list, you were probably bidding on it weren't you?

I assume now that you are getting close to the full set that you are going for the highest grade set? shocked.gif

Blowout, you mean this IF?

I'll keep the update in mind. I know someone who just sent about a hundred?? of these in to CGC....I'll wait until his are posted up and then update...

Am I going for the highest graded set...I'd love to give it a shot. But that would take convincing some of the big boys to "entomb" their 30 cent copies forever...fortunately one can find reading copies (the 25 cent versions) in bargain bins!

To be honest, unless they were slabbed I don't think it would matter...

Right now I will pay around 75% as much for a copy in Good as I will for one in 9.0. And based on what the competing bidders are doing, I think there is a better return on investment from low-grade copies than marginal high grade ones.

It really boils down to this, I would rather have three different 35c variants all with missing centerfolds than one 35c in nice shape...

So by all means, list your extras... I'll be there to bid on them... smile.gif

It was a french fellow; all he had collected were variants. His dad was a government official, and they moved around a fair bit when he was growing up. The collection consisted of mainly the 35-cent variants. I just recently pulled them out because Darth asked me to come-up with a value for the Star Wars 1. From what I can recollect, all the Star Wars (1-4) variants, and from what I hear, that's an accomplishment on its own (its also worth noting this guy was a big sci-fi fan). The X-Men (105-107, which at the time of my purchase, I really needed for my run, so it was a bonus. The logan runs you mentioned (I think the entire run, but only 6 & 7 were the variants). And lots of the Marvel titles (MTU, Tales, Premiere, Triple-Action, Super Action, MTO), and a lot of other stuff. Its funny, but I didn't recall a Godzilla 1 either, but when I dug up the Star Wars for Darth, I found one of those as well. There were also some 30-cent variants in the run; similar collecting habits with the 35-cent variants. The nicest by far are the 35-cent variants (condition wise). The X-Men 98-100 are also nice, but the Sgt Fury 133 & 134 are in the hyper high-grades.

I wonder; I had the regular 30-cent IF 14's graded and they came back 9.0 and 9.4(and that's how I graded them before sending them in). These two copies I have are nicer; would you say that they grade the variant harder than the regular copy?

>>I don't think I missed the Logan's Run issues cuz of rarity, although they are certainly not among the most common.

I know, but my only point was that I'd never seen one before (as with some Westerns and Sgt. Fury's), and if any were listed on EBay, it would likely catch someone's attention and they'd add it to the list. I'm not saying it's the rarest, but there can't be too many floatng around, especially for the poor-selling last issues of a series that was cancelled with the 35-cent versions.

>>As for the discrepancy betweent the prices realized for high versus low grade 35 centers, it makes some sense to me. Essentially, there are collectors who are happy to have ANY copy

Believe me I understand fully, and that's why when I find a copy and the price is right, I nab it, regardless of condition. Some of these comics you could literally never see again, so a VG is better than nothing.

I have sent in the ones I have in my "variant box", but I know I'vew got some others. For example, we were having a party this weekend and the wife made me take a few stacks of books up to my office. When I was boxing them, lo and behold another stash of 35-centers. grin.gif

>>Knowing your grading and you, I'd guess....

I'm wondering if this is a compliment or a slam. tongue.gif

Let me know what that Marvel's Greatest Comics variant grades. I still miss that book and its nice orange cover..... confused.gif

Then again, I do have some nicer condition 30-centers for sure, but that one always struck me a real rarity, especially a nice looking copy.

Hey JC, if you get a chance, send me scans of the ones you just found. At your own leisure, of course. We're getting surprisingly close to (over half, I believe) finishing the set. Not that I think we'll ever do so--I forgot about those damnable cartoon books. I think we all saw the Flintstones 1 a few months ago (damn that was a nice book) and I know the Scooby Doo 1 was found, but I have never seen it or any other cartoon books for that matter, as 35 variants.
