Byrne X-men, All Raw
4 4

I grew up at just the right time to read a lot of these when they came out.  To me and my friends, John Byrne was the man when it came to telling stories and never better than on the run for the X-men with Chris Claremont and Terry Austin.  It wasn't like any story we'd ever seen before.  In many ways, it completely changed our comic collecting because there were now comics that were coming out and months later, they were selling for much more than cover price.  But perhaps more importantly, we were emotionally invested in each of the characters.  Each one had depth and understandable motivations.  Each one had fears and strengths.  And the narrative itself had multiple threads that ran parallel throughout the series, each leading to their resolution while hinting at future possibilities.  These stories were different from what we were used to.

What followed were excellent story arcs from George Perez and Marv Wolfman on the New Teen Titans, Daredevil by Frank Miller and Roger Mackenzie (and eventually just Frank Miller) and the epic John Byrne run on Fantastic Four.  But it all really began with the X-men.  And the emotional journey that we followed to the loss of our favorite character.  Don't get me wrong, the last 6 books of the run are excellent.  But as you read them, the sorrow of loss hung over the last couple stories.  Again, something we weren't used to.

I just read these again during the pandemic and maybe I'm just nostalgic, but they still hold up incredibly well.  Frankly, it's a strong contender for the absolute best story arc in the history of comics.  It would definitely get my vote.  Take a look and see if you find something.  And if you haven't read these, I highly recommend you treat yourself and start.

First up, X-men 110, 7.0, $45.  A solid copy with excellent colors and gloss but there's a small stain in the upper right corner of the back cover (and a little discoloration wraps around to the front).  One of the first X-men books I read as a back issue.  One of the only appearances of an unfulfilled character, Warhawk, who looked oddly similar to Colossus.

X-men 113, 9.0, $120, A nice tight copy with excellent color and gloss.  The final part of the battle against Magneto and the ending that split the X-men in to two groups for a year.  Incidentally, also the first Byrne cover of the run as Dave Cockrum was still producing covers for all of the issues before.  Sold to JustJimN

Spoiler

Note:  My scanner is awful.  It always makes books look dirty when they aren't and whites look almost tan when in reality, they're exceptionally clean.  Apologies for that.

That's all until the morning.

I forgot to mention that none of these books have been worked on in any way to the best of my knowledge.  A couple of the books are very flat but many have non-color breaking dents on the spine that reduce the technical grade to what I have assigned to it..  As I mentioned, my scanner is dirty and awful in terms of fidelity for whites and blacks.  People that have purchased from me know what I'm talking about.

More to come tomorrow!  Thanks for looking.  :foryou:

X-men 116, Copy A, 9.2, $100, One of my favorite issues, the conclusion to the Savage Land story arc results in half the team adrift on the ocean as they work to get home from Magneto's abduction in issue 111.  A tight strong copy with excellent gloss and minimal wear.  This book suffers frequently from miswraps and bad centering.  This copy is one of the better, centered books one will find.

X-men 132, Copy A, Newsstand Copy, 9.4, $130,  Just a super clean and nice tight copy of this excellent book that introduced us to another group of mutants- the Hellfire Club.  Yes, they had been shown before in previous issues, but here is where we find out what they can do.  An amazing battle that my friends and I were in awe of after reading.  As the cover suggests, it doesn't end well for the X-men.  Sold to atomized

X-men 133A, Newsstand Copy, 8.0, $140, Arguably, the greatest cover of the run, it showcases Wolverine alone, making short work of the Hellfire Mercenaries.  This was the first time we saw Wolverine on his own and it was not disappointing.  Great colors and gloss on this copy.

X-men 137, 9.2, $90, The epic conclusion to the Phoenix story line, 3 years in the making.  The artwork and story are truly wonderful, if not controversial.  When I ran a comic book store in the early 90s, there were more arguments and debates about the end of this issue than anything else in comics.  Rumors abounded but in the end, what was done was done.  This is a pretty copy with only a few very minor issues.  Perfectly centered and nice, tight, and squared.  Sold to atomized

X-men 140, 9.2, $50, Part 2 of the Wolverine storyline and his rematch with Wendigo.  A classic cover, this copy has excellent gloss and freshness in hand.  In previous issues of the Hulk, Wendigo was a weird critter that was strong and fierce.  Byrne and Claremont turned Wendigo into a monster that was vicious and terrifying.

X-men 141, 9.0, $210, Arguably the classic cover of the Byrne run, this is part one of Days of Future Past, a storyline that was shocking in it's implication for the future of humanity.  The movie didn't even come close to being as good as the comics.  This copy is very nice and clean, looks new and is well centered.  Sold to atomized
