What are your thoughts on this white stuff?

Hey folks,

I sold a bunch of slabbed books to a boardie, and he sent back pictures of what he thinks are tiny white spots of mold. He says they are on the inner case (so not on the book itself), but I don't have them in hand so I can't be 100% positive.

I can't tell if it is scuffs on the case? Or if it is a weird white mold? I was hoping to get some thoughts on this. Please let know what you think.

99.9% likely that it's scuffing within the case. This has been noticeable from CGC for awhile. Some of it has been speculated to alleviate Newton Rings.

Agree. Although, for some reason, CGC has not commented on this common defect.

It would be nice to know if it was intentional, recognize that it's not great, and inform us that they're looking for another solution.

Most likely scuffing from friction, and also some from bad plastic. There were tons of inner wells that were shipped out before the case re-design that had that type of damage on them. The white dot that is outside the inner well is weird. But that may be floating paper white fiber that got trapped during encapsulation. Nothing suggests mold to me.

I fear that CGC is in a state of flux and things like this are being overlooked due to the massive volume of submissions...

That's one way of looking at it. Another way to look at it is things like this are being overlooked due to the massive lack of quality control...

My guess it's "dandruff" from the packaging these slabs were shipped in after manufacturing. Someone needed to whiff it with some canned air prior to encapsulation.

I'll just say that I am disappointed at how mature all responses have been in spite of this thread's title.

It's early yet.

Plenty of time for someone to rise to the occasion, things taking a turn and getting out of hand?
