PGM ASM 361 - Water Damage
3 3

9 posts in this topic

I was at a garage sale a few months ago and there was a guy with a box full of water-damaged comics he was selling for a dime each. I had been checked out of comic collecting for about 30 years and bought these for readers on a whim.

To make a long story short, these readers got me back into the hobby and I'm just learning how much the hobby has changed since I last dabbled. Back to the subject at hand, there is some staining on the back cover and the moisture rumples translate through the entire book causing it to be slightly concave. No pages are stuck together and there has been no ink transferred from one page to another. Complete book with 100% legibility. Sorry for not being able to fully capture the rumpling, but imagine if you sat on it on a soft chair and the wrinkling translated entirely through the book.

It's a bit hard to make out the defects of this copy since the pics were taken on a black background. I'd suggest using a lighter background, white even (for example, put it against a couple of backing boards).

Because of the water damage and encroaching rust, I'd guess 7.0.

A press could do a lot for this book in the right hands. Likely no higher than 9.0 after.

Thanks for posting.

Wow.. I was expecting sub 4.0. Thanks for the photo tips. Maybe I'll add a few more. Thanks for the comment.

These pics are much better but also better show the extent of the water damage.

3.5/4.0

A really good press to maybe Low VF Range.

Anecdotally, I have never seen any CGC book with water damage / staining higher than 3.0 from CGC.

Moderns are tough to grade when it’s not high grade and you’re counting spine ticks lol. Technically, this is VG range. Maybe higher. But given that it’s a modern with a pronounced defect, it’s probably going to grade lower than that.

If there’s no rust / staining…a press would benefit it. I think you’d get into the VF range with a press.

I see pretty significant rust on the top staple in the centerfold. There are some wonderworker pressers out there, so I have no doubt you can remove the waviness, but I'm dubious that there won't be some physical evidence of this much water damage. And that rust.

I expect this to get something like a 3.0 as is, and a 5.0-6.0 with a press.
