I was hoping to get some advice and opinions on this comic, overall the comic is in great shape but in the bottom right corner on the cover,  it's got a tiny chip missing and the same chip is missing out of  the first page of the comic, Simply put,  I just don't know how much this defect effects the grade

if you guys could please take a look and give me your opinions on the grade of this comic I would greatly appreciate it

thank you so much

The book presents nicely, other than the missing piece all I see is blunted/rounded corners and a few stress lines w/color break.

It appears by your photo's the missing piece was caused by water damage.

Without the missing piece I would grade this book a FN/VF 7.0, with the missing piece (and this is just my opinion, I have no idea how CGC will view this) VG/FN 5.0, this is the grade I would assign if it were it my book, I would rather undergrade than overgrade.

There's a stain on the cover where the chip is missing. I'd call the book 7.0/7.5 without these defects. 5.0/5.5 with them (chips + staining).

Thanks for posting.

I'm at 5.5 fine minus, since missing pieces of any size are not allowed at 6.0 The nicer the book the harder this type of damage affects grade and that's a pretty nice copy. Wihout the damage it would be a 7.0

I think that's somewhat overgeneralizing about missing pieces.  The Overstreet Grading Guide has several examples of chips out in higher grades all the way up to VF/NM 9.0 (smaller chips, admittedly).  The All-Select Comics #1 in the VF 8.0 section has a corner chip out about the same size, plus an additional chip missing from the bottom edge.

If you have a book that is otherwise 9.8 but it has a small edge chip about the same size as this, it's going to get a 7.5 or 8.0 from CGC in most cases.  This book isn't otherwise a 9.8 so it won't grade that high, but I think a 6.5 or 7.0 is possible.  The staining is what keeps it out of 7.5 in my opinion.

I'm also curious to hear what CGC usually does with smaller chips out of books.  I had this at 6.0.  But would love some education - anybody have slabbed books with chips missing?  Any insight on how much lower they graded based on that?  And/or the highest grade on a chipped book you've seen?  Would really like to learn more about how CGC considers this defect.
