They pitched it on social media as a joke with potential.

So studios pounced on the idea with a bidding war. :whatthe:

Who knew so many people wanted to see Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista in a buddy action comedy? The concept caused a bidding war between four different entities but “Deadline” is reporting that MGM is near closing the deal that should be official at some point today.

Momoa and Bautista have been pitching the idea all over town this week. Jonathan Tropper will be writing the project and the pitch finds the duo playing brothers in a Lethal Weapon-Esque buddy cop comedy that will likely shoot in Hawaii. The actors and writer are connected through the Apple TV+ drama series, See, and the idea is an original one from Momoa, Bautista, and Tropper. MGM will develop it but the leads will have pretty lucrative deals once the film goes into production.

Coming off a number one debut this weekend for “Blue Beetle,” director Ángel Manuel Soto has found his next studio project and will direct “The Wrecking Crew” at MGM, TheWrap has exclusively learned.

“The Wrecking Crew” was written by Jonathan Topper prior to the WGA strike. Additionally, Topper’s deal was negotiated and closed prior to the WGA strike. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is being described as a buddy action movie.

Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa are being eyed to headline “The Wrecking Crew” and both were in talks to star prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The duo initially set up the project in 2021, and after a bidding war, the project landed at MGM.

Nice. Let's get back to more action films with jacked up stars like we used to have in the 80s. Predator is still my all-time favourite action muscle movie. The only one close since then has been 300, but the actors were a tad smaller.

Man, no kidding! We need lots more of that. Give me huge dudes shooting guns. Massive explosions. Hilariously bad one-liners. All of it!

Jason Momoa Explains How His And Dave Bautista's Buddy Cop Movie Came Together And Reveals When They'll Get To Start Shooting It

Quote

The former Game Of Thrones star revealed during an interview that his developing collaboration with Dave Bautista is something that was purely conjured by the Knock At The Cabin actor, and he explained how the pieces started falling together to get the project on its feet:

"Dave willed it. I pitched him an idea, and he gets on Instagram, calls out David Leitch, another friend of ours. Then the phone's ringing off the hook. We audition writers. Turns out to be our writer who’s on our show. He loved it, Jonathan Tropper from See."

This is a project that has been a long time coming and, as noted by Jason Momoa, dates back to Dave Bautista manipulating the universe via social media. In August 2021, the Guardians of the Galaxy star took to his personal Twitter account (not Instagram) and wrote that he wanted to work with Momoa on a "Lethal Weapon type buddy cop movie directed by David Leitch." They ended up connecting with Jonathan Tropper to develop the script, and by November of that year, via Deadline, the project sparked a Hollywood bidding war that was ultimately won by MGM.
