mergebow1
Hi All, Interested in your thoughts. Got a Marvel Tails #1 back with a 9.4 grade. No graders notes. There are no tics, corners look good, back looks great and had white pages. They only thing I see is ink smear from the printing process. You can see the ink smeared on back and front in same location of the book. Not from writing or from liquid, it looks to be from when the book rolled along a conveyor or something. Adding pictures. If there is nothing else, please point out if you see it, is this something that would be enough to grade it 9.4 vs 9.6 or 9.8? Should it be treated something like bindery tear? candygramformongo
Agree that you've identified the likely culprit of the lower-than-expected grade. Not sure I agree that it's ink smear from the printing process. I'm not saying it's not but just not sure what would make you confident of a printing issue vs. it being something the book picked up in the wild along the way. Others around here have much more knowledge of printing defects and they may correct me but if I'm grading that book I'm definitely deducting for those streaks/marks and 9.4 doesn't seem off considering it's on both front and back and not tiny. Bottom spine corner doesn't look great to me but not enough to bring down to a 9.4 on its own in my opinion. Was this cleaned?
grendelbo
Looks 9.4. CGC will not downgrade for common production-related defects. This may or may not be one in their eyes. I have a few books with this printer roll defect - Thor 337 comes immediately to mind (and on a white cover - jeez). Thanks for sharing.
Funnybooks
seems harsh...9.6 from this vantage point
Galen130
I agree with my fellow boardies on this. I see ink transfers, maybe from stacking. I doubt that a cleaning would completely remove those, but it might get a 9.6 if cleaned professionally. 9.4 seems appropriate as is. IMO. 🖖
