I'm a stong supporter in the ideals behind the OS data gathering, but as we all know, it is mainly a dealer tool (for buying collections) due to the "dealer-based data" used for compilation, it is mostly useless for buyers.

 

Another important factor is that the updated OS prices are not solely from 2002-03 data, but are long-term averages that take the new data into account. This helps keeps price increases stable, mitigate the effects of a crash, and keep dealer buy prices low in the age of CGC and Guide Multiples.

 

So yes, the process of gathering and displaying only current dealer sales data is a good one, but that's not what OS actually does.
