They were popular in the ice cream/Italian ice trucks that would drive thru neighborhoods in the summer.

I had the trucks in the barrios but always bough smoke bombs, ninja turtles, and or, just a normal cone.

Idk I never was much for them and were talking late 80's

I've heard of klondike of course, tbh I wasnt too much of a fan, which explains why I dont know it. Just thought I'd mention cause now I read the post better.
