See now I've posted a few perfect looking books on the "spare a grade?" board and I don't remember anyone ever awarding a 9.8

Pretty much every time they find that one potential defect that keeps the book out of 9.8 territory.

Savage Dragon 102, an X-Men 11 and a Wolverine 8 and a few others I thought were perfect but no go with those guys.

And I really trust those guys' opinions and agree with them that a visible defect should = 9.6.

Those 3 books are still at cgc so I'll post the grades when they come in.
