2022 has been a big year for the kaiju that live within the universe of Godzilla, as Legendary Pictures announced that it is partnering with Apple TV to create a new television series that will once again drag viewers into the world of the MonsterVerse. With Legendary also currently working on a film that will expand on the new iterations of the lizard king, Kong, and other giant monsters, it seems that Toho Studios is prepping for a new kaiju movie of their own and has released new details for the setting of this upcoming adventure in the world of Godzilla.

It's been a few years since we last saw the Godzilla of the East, with Shin Godzilla introducing a very different version of the lizard king, created under the expertise of Hideaki Anno, the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion. With the latest film from Japan introducing the most terrifying looking lizard king to date, there has yet to be word as to whether this new take on the classic kaiju will be making a comeback in the future. Anno himself is keeping busy however and is expanding the "Shin Universe" with upcoming takes on two other classic characters from Japan in Shin Kamen Rider and Shin Ultraman.

As reported by Kaiju News Outlet, Toho Studios is apparently looking for extras for an upcoming kaiju project that will take place during the 1940s and is set to begin filming next month with director Takashi Yamazaki taking the opportunity to journey to the past to tell a new story in the universe of Godzilla:

Something about that one that I enjoyed much more than any of the big budget Hollywood Zilla flicks.

I think it comes down to the sensible way they factored in the human part of the story without it distracting from the monster.

Big government getting in its own way while trying to figure out how to take on a massive threat to its country. And that bureaucracy costing lives while they worked through the next moves.

Takashi Yamazaki directing, hell yeah I can see this. He is by no means Hideaki Anno (both in style and name recognition) but has shown he can work well with very small budgets and whatever -script he is given (regardless of how nonsensical it is).

First movie I saw of his was his very early work Returner (2002), which was super low budget but managed to come off like a decent mid-90s feeling Terminator action movie (no real original ideas though, but that wasn't his doing - he at least made seeing large Transformers on screen look cool and knew how to do a gunfight even though he was very much new to it all).

The Godzilla Minus One release date has been announced, and it will hit theaters in the United States on December 1, 2023. This is the first Toho Godzilla movie released in theaters since Shin Godzilla, which arrived in July 2016. Since then, there were three animated Godzilla movies launching on Netflix.

Behind the camera, Takashi Yamazaki directs the movie. This is his first Godzilla movie, but he previously won Director of the Year and Screenplay of the Year at the Japanese Academy Film Prize in 2006 for Always: Sunset on Third Street. That was a drama film, but he has also worked on big action movies, directing the sci-fi action movies Parasyte: Part 1 and Parasyte: Part 2, as well as the CGI anime Dragon Quest: Your Story. Other than Yamazaki, who also wrote the screenplay and oversaw the visual effects, there are no other names publicly attached to the movie.

Man, that is one heck of a mean looking Godzilla interpretation.

:fear:

I like that they are leaning into the back spikes being clearly reminiscent of long-term nuclear waste warning sculptures.
