Atlas is Back!

For September Stan Lee wrote:

Millie the Model #88 - art by Dan DeCarlo (He still does all but the text story in Millie though...)

Patsy Walker #80 - art by Al Hartley, Stan writes half the stories.

Two Gun Kid #45 - 2 stories with art by Jack Davis

Kid Colt Outlaw #82 - 2 stories with art by Jack Keller

Navy Combat was canceled

Miss America was canceled

Homer the Happy Ghost was canceled

Atlas also released World of Fantasy #15

New Comics added were:

Strange Worlds #1

Tales of Suspense #1

Tales to Astonish #1

But where did these new Sci-Fi titles come from? Didn't publisher Martin Goodman despise Sci-Fi?

Jack Kirby talked him into it, due to his SUCCESS with it over at DC.

See the legend incorrectly has led us to believe that Jack was fired from DC and came to Marvel/Atlas with his hat in hand, in desperate need of work.

But the truth is, Jack saw the possible writing on the wall at DC before that and wanted to make sure he had work if Editor Jack Schiff decided to push him out. Their court battle wouldn't be until December! Kirby still had 4 more issues of the Challengers of the Unknown he'd produce for DC after this (+ 4 more Green Arrow stories and a couple of House of Mystery stories). And he could've done work at anytime for Harvey Comics.

Jack came to Marvel/Atlas to do what he'd always done. Create stories to sell comics.

Before we get started...

ON NEWSSTANDS FEBRUARY 1953

Let's go back to February of 1953. Men's Adventures #21, pre-code. Bill Everett cover.

Stan Lee signed his name to this 3 page yarn, drawn by Fred Kida.

On comics.org it says that The plot of this story is the same as the plot in Strange Worlds #1 (1958), Tales of Suspense #11 (1960) and Strange Tales #101 (1962)

Hmmmm.....I would beg, tremendously to differ... but read for yourself....

Now I'm a HUGE fan and a big supporter of comics.org. But here... whoever posted that is... imho, just plain incorrect.

Kirby's story reads like a Kirby written story and has no real relationship with the first story other than; flying saucers aren't what we think they are. In the first one, they're large living clams and in Kirby's version they're alien life forms themselves.

So why the entry?

To make you think this was a story that Stan 'plotted' and gave to novice 'writer' Larry Lieber (his brother) to ---script for established, proven, 20 year professional Jack Kirby to do.

Nonsense.

If you've been reading these stories, this is CLEARLY written by Jack.

And if Stan had anything to do with it he would've signed his name. Just like he did on the Men's Adventures #21 story.

So what about the other stories it says it's 'related' to...? It's not the same --script for sure.

And here is Jack Kirby's cover and story in Tales to Astonish #1, the lead story.

Marvel would try to retro-actively say that the plot was by Stan and the -script by Larry Lieber, but there is no signature and again this reads just like Kirby's work from DC. It makes no sense that they would need to give a -script by an unproven writer to a guy like Jack Kirby, who'd been doing it for 20 years.

And here is Steve Ditko's story in Tales of Suspense #1, the last story. Don Heck cover.

Marvel would later go on to credit Stan with the writing of the story in the   Marvel Masters of Suspense: Stan Lee & Steve Ditko Omnibus (Marvel, 2019 series), but there's no signature, so he most likely didn't write it.

Strange Tales #67 (Joe Sinnott cover) - Steve Ditko would also have a story in this issue. This again reads like a Joe Gill story, though it's unknown who actually wrote. Marvel would try and give Stan credit for it in later on, but there's no signature (Stan signed EVERYTHING he touched by this point).

ON NEWSSTANDS OCTOBER 1958

Unfortunately for Atlas, Jack Kirby still had work at DC going on! It was a Challengers of the Unknown month!

Challengers of the Unknown #5 is again WRITTEN by Jack Kirby as well as penciled (with somewhat less over powering inks by Wally Wood). There are those who would have you believe that it was all the written work of Dave Wood or the concepts of Joe Simon, but Jack Kirby has his complete stories here and this material is clearly his own.

And what does he choose to do with it? Super Powers!

Also... it's a another complete story... Jack is a trailblazer again in comics, as he is ahead of everyone in creating full length adventure stories in comic books.
