Would appreciate your thoughts on the deduction for a small pen mark on the back cover

I'd be more concerned about whatever is in the white area below "SPIDER". IDK what that is. Ignoring that, I might expect a 9.4

I thought that was production....

Possible. It's definitely not in any of the copies I surveyed. I don't have one of these, so I can't compare directly

I took a look online and it’s definitely not common. I do see a little of it on these...

Very nice copy.  That bottom staple had me worried a bit as it looked like a small tear from the front but it does not seem to be evident from the back cover scan. A 9.4 (near mint) is reasonable even with the pen mark on the back. 

I looked at my copies (both are direct editions, not Canadian newsstand) and neither have that "smudge" or mark on the front cover but if other copies have it I would roll the dice and agree it is likely a production defect.

There is a small tear at the staple, but it too seems production.

I had the book marked as an 8.5

Took it out to review my previous grade & ended up here. 

I personally deduct for production issues. Minor deductions, but I can’t ignore them like CGC
