I'm trying to figure out if I can pick a 9.8 candidate. I think (hope) this book might qualify. (not that I'm going to ever send it in, this is more about me testing my knowledge).

if there's no spine roll, might it be a 9.8? Just trying to figure out if I have any flawless books.

Maybe. Maybe not. I would doubt anyone's ability to see the difference between a 9.6 & 9.8 in photos. Even in hand, it could be hard to tell the difference. "Finger bends" are a thing CGC will note and I've got a graded book or 2 in hand where I can't see what finger bends they're talking about. I think the same book could be graded on 10 different days and come back either 9.6 or 9.8 depending on who was working that day and when they saw the book. Maybe an occasional 9.4 if a particular grader was having a good/bad day. With that kind of uncertainty, I am no fan of expecting or paying for 9.8s. Roll the dice, maybe you get a 9.8 sometimes, but be happy with a 9.6 or even a 9.4.

Probably 9.4 - slight edge crease on the right side of the front cover. Press will help.
