Popular Post valiantman Posted September 15, 2022 Popular Post Share Posted September 15, 2022 (edited) He was referenced as the "Darque power" in Rai #0 (the Valiant past-present-future roadmap) in November 1992 and had dialogue (but no visual) in Shadowman #7, but he first appeared in Shadowman #8 in December 1992, the character of "Master Darque" was an expert in the dark arts of voodoo (and all things occult) in New Orleans, though he was already over 100 years old and had lived in various places. He was drawn by Barry Windsor-Smith on the cover of Eternal Warrior #6 (January 1993), which is his first full cover appearance (not in the shadows). Since he was tall and skinny with a ponytail and very evil, it's likely that he was partially referencing Jim Shooter, who had grown Valiant into an actual contender in the comic book world before being pushed out by the venture capitalists and non-comic ownership of Valiant at the time (late 1992). Darque caused trouble for various Valiant characters from 1992 to 1996. His sister, Sandria Darque, was also popular, serving as a "voice of reason" to some of his crazier ideas. Acclaim rebooted Shadowman in 1997, and he became a younger character named Alexander Darque, including his own one-shot title and a four-issue miniseries (Darque Passages). He wasn't necessarily the "biggest bad" in the Valiant Universe, but he was probably top 3 overall (and probably #1 villain for some fans). Reintroduced (without the ponytail) in Shadowman #1 in 2012 when Shadowman was rebooted by the new Valiant ownership (at the time). One of the better early (new) Valiant 2013 covers with Darque (obviously referencing that Eternal Warrior #6 from twenty years earlier): Some of the best Master Darque stories are probably Shadowman #0 and Shadowman #10 from 2013... definitely worth buying for the reading material if you see them in a bargain bin. They're probably similar to Vertigo titles (Sandman, Lucifer, Constantine, Death), if someone knows nothing about Valiant but recognizes the Vertigo comparison. He's the Voldemort of the Valiant universe (several years before Voldemort was created). Alternatively, he could be "Evil Sorcerer Supreme", if that's an easier reference.
