PGM Star Wars 81

Trying to get some opinions on this. My search for a nice gradeable star wars 81 continues. Bought this off eBay with only a front cover picture to go on. Should have asked for shot of the back... last one I bought had some pretty moderate tanning so it's kind of a fool me once shame on you, fool me twice..  well, you know the rest. Anyways, my opinion on ebay sellers and disclosing obvious issues notwithstanding, how badly would the 1/2" or so tear on the back cover of this one effect the grade? It's got a few ticks too so wasn't perfect anyways, but what am I looking at with this one?

All I see is what you have already mentioned...

3 small color breaking spine ticks, tear on outer edge of rear cover.

Without the tear being present and due to the color breaking spine ticks I personally cannot grade this book higher than VF/NM 9.0, with the tear, and I do not know how CGC would view this, I would think it will drop the grade by 2 points to a FN/VF 7.0.

Hopefully someone that has sent a book in with this type of defect can better answer this question.

☝️ yes. By CGC standards, the highest a book can get with a "major" defect is 7.0 and anything longer than a very tiny tear would be significant. Could go down to a 6.5, but I would think 7.0 is a safe bet based on what I've experienced.

On an otherwise perfect book a 1/2" tear would probably drop the grade to an 8.5. This book has a few minor defects and one moderate (IMO) defect.

I'd say 7.5/8.0.

Thanks for posting.
