Ok, at first glance, this one might be easy to grade. The big 8.0 on the case gives a clue. But my question is: if I cleaned off the gunk on the back cover, could this get a 9.0?! This would be a significant enough bump to pay someone to deep clean it.

Graders notes? I'd post in the comic grading & restoration issues thread as the ?majority? of people chatting here are not actually doing cleaning. CGC doesn't like that kind of grime certainly. 8.0 is a high grade IMO for that amount of soiling/staining, so you'd run the risk of coming back lower if the clean after crack was not successful

I was surprised to find out that there were grader's notes:

and it was graded 10 years ago:

What's weird: the bottom back cover isn't an issue, it's the top.

Graders notes don't necessarily list all (or any) of the issues. I have more than one 9.0 with no notes, but clearly there are reasons they're not 9.8s. I would be very concerned about opening & trying to do anything. Based on anecdotal evidence, CGC has gotten harder on stains over the last few years.

It's a weak 8.0 to start with so getting a 9.0 after scrub n scrape?
