Treat it like math and financial analysis.  Take the data and do your own projections and estimates and see if they meet up with your profit criteria.  The more time you put into learning and analysis, the better decisions you’ll make. 
 

of course that also means you might put in a bunch of time to find out you won’t make much money

To properly answer this question, we need to know what your plans are for the books. Are you planning on selling them, keeping them but want them properly preserved and, what is the FMV for these books in their particular grade?

If you are planning to sell them, then yes, grading could be worthwhile and make it easier to sell, however, you have to figure the cost of grading vs. the FMV of the book.

If you are keeping them, slabs do not offer any more protection than Mylar and an Acid Free Board, slabs are not airtight, not UV protected and need to be stored in the same conditions/controlled environment as raw books in Mylites, (temps in the 60 - 70 degree range, humidity at 40%-50%, away from all UV light, away from moisture/water and heat sources, not stored in unfinished/un-climate controlled basements/garages/attics)
