Administrator CGC Mike Posted August 7, 2023 Administrator Share Posted August 7, 2023 Here are the rules. Please read them carefully. There will be 4 rounds with 5 books per round. After the deadline for the signup thread has ended, I will start a new thread in the hey buddy can you spare a grade section, scans of the first 5 books will be posted, and I will start a PM thread between myself and each participant. Be sure to use THIS PM thread to submit your grades every round. I will post a list for the books in the thread where the books are posted for each round. Please copy and paste that list into our PM, and add the grades for each book. Only CGC grades (numerical) will be accepted. Non CGC grades like fine+ or Very fine- will not be accepted. Be sure to follow the threads that the books are posted in. This is the only way you will know when the next round starts. There will be no update when the next round begins sent to our PM thread. All of the threads with the books and the results will be posted in the hey buddy can you spare a grade section. You will have 4 days to get your grades in. After I record your grades, I will reply to the PM thread so you know that your grades have been recorded. Only grades from .5 to 9.8 will be accepted. Grades of 9.9 and 10.0 that are received, will be recorded as a 9.8 Please do not bump the PM for any reason other than submitting your grades. Nobody will be allowed to change their grades. Do not discuss your grades with others in the thread until the round is closed. Also, please do not ask any questions about the books publicly or privately (by sending me a PM) . If I am provided any special notes from CGC, I will share them in the thread. If anyone fails to submit their grades for a round, or do not submit grades for all of the books in a round, their participation in the contest will be terminated. You will be able to participate in the next contest. After the 4 days are up and the round is closed, I will post scans of the books in CGC holders to reveal their grades, and include the graders notes for the books. A new thread will be started to show the results of each participant. The results thread will most likely be started the next day. There will be a new thread started for the next round. This thread will most likely be started within an hour after the prior round has ended. 0 points is the best score one can achieve. 1 point will be added to your score for each grade that is higher or lower than the actual grade. If the actual grade for the book is 5.0 and you guess 4.0, your score for that book is 2. If the actual grade for the book is 5.0 and you guess 6.0, your score for that book is 2. If the actual grade for the book is 5.0 and you guess 5.0, your score for that book is 0. CGC will be awarding Grading Credit. $500 for 1st place, $250 for 2nd place and $100 for 3rd place. Popular Post zzutak
Just a few final thoughts in advance of the Champions taking the podium ...... Series/Title & Issue Selection: Contest 7 (C7) arguably had the most interesting slate of books to date, including a really sweet selection of 1950s Atomic Age issues that one rarely sees. Era Distribution: If one looks at the first seven contests (C1 thru C7), the distribution of eras represented has been remarkably even. Keep in mind that most books from the Copper Age and beyond are so common that even specimens in pristine 9.6/9.8 condition generally elicit a response (so I can see why they're underrepresented). Era Σ C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 C6 C7 1930s-1940s 28 4 3 4 5 3 6 3 1950s 30 4 3 6 2 5 2 8 1960s 39 5 7 4 6 5 5 7 1970s 26 4 4 4 5 4 4 1 1980s 10 2 2 0 0 3 2 1 1990s-2020s 7 1 1 2 2 0 1 0 Σ 140 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 Grade Distribution: As @Get Marwood & I has noted, this contest (C7) was heavily overweight with books in the 5.0 to 7.0 range (13 of 20 books). The last contest (C6) was heavily overweight with books in the 8.5 to 9.6 range (10 of 20 books). The first seven contests (C1 thru C7) have been severely underweight with books in the sub-3.0 range (only 7 of 140 books). While I think it would be a huge mistake to completely even out the distribution of grades in any single contest (as that would lead to "what grade is still missing" type guesses), it would be nice if this aspect of the books selected was a bit better balanced. CGC Grade Σ C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 C6 C7 0.5 0 1.0 0 1.5 3 1 1 1 1.8 0 2.0 1 1 2.5 3 1 1 1 3.0 10 3 1 1 3 1 1 3.5 6 1 2 1 1 1 4.0 9 3 1 2 1 2 4.5 10 2 3 1 2 1 1 5.0 13 2 1 1 4 1 4 5.5 8 1 3 2 1 1 6.0 8 1 3 1 1 2 6.5 9 1 2 2 2 1 1 7.0 12 2 1 2 1 1 5 7.5 7 1 1 1 2 1 1 8.0 4 1 1 1 1 8.5 7 1 1 1 1 2 1 9.0 13 2 2 2 3 1 3 9.2 5 1 1 1 2 9.4 7 2 2 1 2 9.6 4 2 1 1 9.8 1 1 Σ 140 20 20 20 20 20 20 20 Grade Consistency: Anyone who's spent time in the PGM/Spare-A-Grade Forum realizes that CGC's assessments are occasionally exceptionally harsh or exceptionally soft. Indeed, some degree of variability should be expected, as grading is subjective -- done by real human beings who can miss, ignore, and/or discount one or more specific features and/or flaws. In addition, CGC's grading rubric intentionally allows for some degree of flexibility, as there are literally billions of possible combinations of blemishes/defects. This is why, in CGC's early years, three individuals independently assigned a grade to each book. With a simple/short phone call, you could find out whether a CGC-certified book you were considering acquiring was, for example, a "weak VF" (8.0, 8.0, 7.5), a "solid VF" (8.0, 8.0, 8.0), or a "strong VF" (8.0, 8.0, 8.5). Good times, for sure. There will be no returning to the good old days. Nonetheless, it would be nice if the 20 books in this contest were all graded in a single, short (60~90 minute) session by a panel of three experienced, detail-oriented graders, with each individual independently assigning a grade to each book and, in the case of a non-uniform assessment, a brief discussion to form a consensus on each book's final/recorded grade. Contest Management: @CGC Mike always does a great job of administering these events. Mad props! zzutak
The appropriate simile here is "like a dog with a bone." In GM&I's case, that bone is the "zombie 7.0" (the grade that would not die). In my case, it's the masking tape defaced Horrific #3.

The books are then run through our senior grading team in short order, as if they are grading any other invoice. Matt finalizes the grades. He also discusses any differences in grading opinions among the group.
