Johnson did at least one movie poster that I know of, and came from a film animation background so was familiar with the techniques, also,  Popular Library did quite a few of this type of multiple vignette covers in the late 50's - it was an art director thing I'm pretty sure.

I think you're spot-on. Take for instance these two posters: it wouldn't take much to rework them into paperback covers. The structural elements are already there.

Ok, this is the 15th and final one off the stack for the $10 sale and a classic it is

Rampart Street by Everett and Olga Weber  Pocket Books No. 681  9th Print  1954  $10  SOLD

Classic Barye Phillips bondage cover, one of the most risque Pocket Books covers for sure. Fine. Has a light cover crease front and back or would grade higher, a very square and tight copy with bold colors and little wear.

Steel Town could almost be Ray Johnson, look at Ann Sheridan and look at Johnson's Wonderful Bra ad from the late 1940's  

 

 

Of course, Johnson could have just used an Ann Sheridan photo or magazine tear sheet for his model like artists so often did but it's funny how certain images will hit you like "Hey, I've seen that before..."
