backing boards.  the deepest of lies.  boards that claim to be acid free contain acid and the ones that claim to be made from 24 point solid bleached sulfate, coated and buffered on one side with 3% calcium carbonate..........are not!  it is straits out fraud. Gerber does not want to address what other companies are doing because he doesn't want to get involved in litigation or other stuff related.  Gerbers backers boards are actual "Archival" boards.  the are legit and have the following specs

  • Genuine acid-free, cellular fiber.
  • Meets strict U.S. Government standards for archival storage.
  • 3% calcium carbonate buffer throughout, maintains a neutral pH.
  • White on both sides.
  • The highest quality backing board available anywhere

I can believe this - the Gerber boards have a much different feel than the competitor backer boards. I've got a variety of boards, especially the thicker 56pt ones, which are nice - but as soon as I cycle out of those, I'll probably be back to Gerber's for my long-term collection stuff. I'll just double up the fullbacks to get that 56pt feel. Thanks for the info.

Hi Guys,

So what are the "Mylar" bags that I have been seeing recertify that look like 4 mil, don't require a backing board and have a flap? Thanks for any feedback! I am trying to skip the backing boards and like to see the reverse of the book....

The original 4 mil mylar bags are expensive and you still need a back board. I use 2 mil mylar , as it is much cheaper.

I'm loving using a Mylites2 and toploader combination. That way there's no backerboard to suck the ink off of my books, and I can view the back cover w-out having to remove the book from the bag.

Paying $2 a pop to protect your books gets very expensive.

Good backerboards are not cheap.

I'd be in heaven if I could find a toploader that will accomodate a 900M2 Mylite.
