I gave this list to Mike in a PM (from this discussion) but I thought it should be kept in public and maintained since the Royal Blues will now have a separate entry in the CGC database. Some of these slabs were posted here on the boards by @Darkga and others were found on Heritage, eBay, and other auction sites. Please let me know if you disagree with any of these or have something to add (with an image to confirm). Unfortunately, I didn’t save the images for some of these numbers and were based on my thoughts at the time.

He is THE expert but doesn’t post much with text. I simply wanted a thread that keeps track of the legit CGC copies with Royal Blue covers and those that were slabbed erroneously.

At the moment, only the recently sold 9.4 (3748004001) and 9.6 (3942754013) have the new “Second Printing/Blue Foil Edition” in the database. Hey @CGC Mike, how do we get the other legit copies corrected?

This is a problem: 4386556015

Graded on 2/19/24 and clearly NOT a blue foil edition. This needs to stop before it becomes a real problem again @CGC Mike

I looked at the recent census numbers for this book and there are now eleven 9.8s of the Second Printing/Blue Foil edition (was previously at 0 a few weeks ago). I’ll wager that most of these, if not all, are the green second printing like the eBay auction above. Is there anything that can be done about this? Is it possible to send the scans of the graded examples to people who know the difference and get it changed in the registry? I’m sure myself and @RockMyAmadeus can help you guys out

This thread has taught me that if I'm ever in a position to determine what variants to produce for a potentially-significant comic, I'm going with a blue foil, green foil, aqua foil, AND turquoise foil. That'll show 'em.

Seriously, I'm pretty sure these are a cinch to distinguish in hand, but in photos with crappy lighting? Yeah...

For the graders to do this in the most simple way possible, they need to always have a true mass produced, second printing on-hand (which were all manufactured with the same colored cover). Just about anyone who isn’t colorblind would be able to tell the difference under the same lighting. In fact, I don’t think anyone who’s willing to spend big money on the true Blue cover has ever been fooled by the CGC label. Additionally, all the eBay sellers I’ve come across either know the difference or change their descriptions/pricing when notified about the error.

Unfortunately, the only people who haven't learned how to distinguish between the two second print covers are the CGC graders, but this can easily be fixed if they’re willing to do so
