Pukie
Hello, the book has top edge coloring. Is this foxing? Also a small dot on the FC. If the book were perfect, how does the spot affect the grade? Thank you for your time and help.
zzutak
On 6/10/2024 at 10:35 AM, Pukie said: Is this foxing? No. It's oxidation. Here's a very, very basic explanation: The principal component of comic book paper paper is cellulose extracted from minimally-purified wood pulp. Wood (and thus "cheap" paper) also contains lignin. Tanning/yellowing of cheap paper is generally due to a chemical process known as oxidation. Oxidation is frequently induced by exposure to light ("photo-oxidation"). Although both cellulose and lignin can oxidize, it's the oxidation of lignin that is the main cause of yellowing, toning, and/or tanning of comic book paper. grendelbo

Pukie
Thanks for all the input. If preparing books for sale, and having to set asking prices, would oxidation be treated more or less harshly than the same amount of foxing? I am sure I have been noting some defects using inaccurate terminology.
Q.N.S.
7.0 is high range for oxidation. There's too much of it to guarantee a 7.0, in my opinion a dip to 6.5 is possible.
