Oh man.   You mean to say he's made another quest well known to the public?   He must enjoy slamming car doors on his nutz.

Not really.

Yoram, I didn’t bid on the ASM 379 cover. Could have purchased it a long time ago for a lot less.

Yeah it was highlighted that it went for a little over $5k in '08 haha...my guess is even pre-covid it would've been half the price of this result. But then again, if you've been in this world long enough just like any commodity, you can't look back... Still a good buy today, I think in time covers and the right interiors from that particular run will hold or only go up in time...

To be fair, I’ve made a few of my own quests public: a McSpidey cover and early Hobgoblin covers.

Different kettle of fish than saying you’re trying to buy them ALL.

Are these Dave Mandel pieces?

Just checked the Miller cover and it does now have "From the David Mandel Collection" in the description. The Byrne X-Men slash doesn't have any mention of from the Mandel collection tho.

It be cool to have a piece that was once owned by Mr Mandel.

having seen the pics of the original a little closer, I have to back off my original prediction.   As much as I like the published cover, the original isn't bad but it isn't inspiring either.    I think the final auction price starts with a 2.

It’s such a classic image, not just in how The Punisher gets the drop on Cap, but in how I think Miller was ahead of his time in terms of cover and composition. Although it has a cover date of Jan 1980, it was released in November 1979. This is perhaps the first classic cover of the ‘80s?

^ The coloring job really adds a lot to the 241 cover IMO.

100% agree. Although it’s not the color but the effective use of white/negative space with the background, the title logo, Cap’s white stripes, and Punisher’s white gloves and boots. Perhaps the OA feels uninspired because of the missing title logo, and the off-white/cream color of the board, as well as that ugh personalization in the live area. I’d still would love to own this.

Great post!

Seeing the sequence of cover artists at the time--Budiansky (), Miller (still unknown, as DD was only up to #162 at that point) and Milgrom (, my second least favorite Marvel artist of all time, behind only Frank Robbins)--reminds me how at the time I was wondering why Marvel seemed determined to kill off Cap's title.

I've seen Dave's collection in person fairly consistently over the past 20 years. To give you an idea of the scope/scale of his collection (especially at its peak around 10 years ago)...I have ZERO memory of ever seeing this. And I'm a Miller AND Punisher guy, especially in the early part of my collecting.

Two possibilities: 1. There's so much art, I never actually got around to seeing it(!). 2. I did see it, and have simply forgotten. More likely. I'd say 80% of what I've seen at his place is just a blur.

Hope this does great for Dave, and look forward to talking to him about it after the auction!

Didn’t they do this with Wolverine recently. I guess they need something like this to peak interest over the next 10-20 issues as fans to see how he miraculously returns, yawn.

Comparing Miller to Milgrom  Thank goodness Stern and Byrne came to injection some life into the dead corpse that was the Cap series back then. It was bird cage liner for a few years.

I wasn't comparing them in terms of quality, but pointing out the perspective of comic buyers who saw the covers of this title being drawn by a lousy artist, an unknown artist, and a really lousy artist.  There was a clear signal being sent by Marvel that they did not prioritize Captain America at all.

So true, it was such an after thought. I wouldn’t even considered looking twice at most issues for about a 20 issue run (an eternity when you consider that stuff I really enjoyed I would long for the next issue immediately after reading the current release). Such a shame. This is why I think Byrne is one of the greatest talents ever. He could take a mediocre series and make it a classic in just a few issues.
