October 1999 Marvel Comic $2.99 newsstand price variant

Everyone says there is no $2.99 price variant from October of 1999- February of 2000. I have a Bishop #1 from October of 99' that is $2.99 newsstand price variant. It's beat up but it's not a complete loss by any means.  Found it in the back of a book store for a $1.

Hello HumanMeta :)

Welcome to the forum.

I suspect you're making a mistake here, given that the dates that you quote mirror this thread I started on the forum about price variants (and I got a notification this morning that you are following me):

https://boards.cgccomics.com/blogs/entry/4922-marvel-1999-~-2000-us-newsstand-price-variants/

The Bishop book you show is the $2.99 newsstand copy of the book. The Direct Edition is also priced $2.99, as it was a double sized issue:

The indicias are wrong, and are based on the standard size issue price ($1.99 US/ $2.99 CAN). These mistakes aren't uncommon - they just forgot to amend them. For there to be a newsstand variant of Bishop #1, you would need to find a second newsstand copy with a different cover price than $2.99. This, you won't find. The variants in the date window that I have written about exist only for the $1.99 standard sized issues. There were no variants produced for the $2.99 double sized issues.

Let me know if that clears it up, or whether I've got the wrong end of the stick somehow.

I didn't see anywhere it says deluxe like the regular x-men deluxe books.

Not sure I understand what you mean there, Meta?

The first issue of Bishop is a double-sized one, hence the higher cover price. Ignoring cover art variants, there are two versions:

  1. Direct Edition, priced $2.99 US / $4.50 CAN
  2. Newsstand Copy, priced $2.99 US / $4.50 CAN

There are no newsstand price variants, i.e. a newsstand priced differently to $2.99 US / $4.50 CAN

And the the inside states sold for $1.99 us and $2.99 Canada.

Yes, as I said in my earlier post, that's a mistake - that pricing reflects the regular size ongoing issue price (click to enlarge):

The six titles I've posted about (table below) only have newsstand price variants (priced $2.29 and $2.49, in addition to the $1.99 regular price) where the issue is standard size. Whenever the issue was double size, like your Bishop #1, and shown in yellow on the table, there were no price variants produced. Maybe the table isn't clear enough in that respect, so I'll think about how it could be better presented. Bottom line - green means they exist, yellow means they don't and white means not found yet / not expected to exist.

Either way, Bishop doesn't appear to have been one of the six titles chosen, unless you can find a $2.29 or $2.49 priced newsstand copy of issues 2, 3 or 4 (the November 1999~January 2000 issues).

So on both $2.29 price variants, the inside cover price States $1.99 US. And the deluxe edition books had a more glossy slick pages and the regular edition had the normal newspaper style pages. As can be seen in maximum security #1 of 3.

In some - but not all - of the known $2.29 / $2.49 newsstand price variants, they didn't amend the indicia - example below where the Thor $2.29 copy (regular cover price $1.99) still shows $1.99 in the indicia:

Paper stock, glossy or newspaper, doesn't have any bearing on the cover price so I'm not sure what you're getting at there?

Can't see God,Gravity,or air but they do exist.

Well, two of the three, certainly.

If you want to show me a 'newsstand price variant' of Bishop #1, please, post it here now. Post two newsstand copies that have different cover prices and I'll praise you to the skies. Even if you had a copy with a $2.99 / $4.50 indicia I'd be excited. But if all you have is a $2.99 US / $4.50 newsstand copy with a $1.99 US / $2.99 CAN indicia (a few more on eBay right now), then there's no price variant, is there. They all have the same cover / indicia pricing, so there are no variants.

This the regular $1.99 newsstand of Spidey #10...
