Best background color for cover scans?

Previously, when I've submitted cover scans for grading, I've been told that the default white background of my scanner is not an ideal choice, since it can obscure corner details and cause the scanner to wash out colors and such.

 

So, what IS a good color paper to use as the background for cover-scans? Is it as simple as a color that contrasts the main cover color? Or is there one color that works best for all covers?

Just a good scan will do in my opinion. Those that use a background just add "color" to a comic. No more or less...

 

I will say that any color put on a background against a white cover though will better highlight the comic...
