CGC FORUM TOP BRONZE AGE COVERS - Final List, Thought, Impressions

89 posts in this topic

2 3rds would beat 1 1st because if 3 people were voting, it would mean 2 out of 3 agree the book is merits at least 3rd and at most 1st.

You guys have done a wonderful job. This was a most enjoyable contest.

Here's my list of the top 21 (there's a 3-way tie at 20), based on a weighting of 5-4-3-2-1. Ties were broken by highest number of first place votes, then highest second, then highest third. Big thanks to jbud for doing it, as it was very fun.

Position/Issue/points

1. Batman 227, 90

2. Green Lantern 76, 69

3. Wonder Woman 199, 52

4. Amazing Spider-Man 122, 51

5. Superman 233, 40

6. X-Men 141, 39

7. Batman 251, 37

8. House of Secrets 92, 30

9. DC 100 Page 4, 29

10. Batman 244, 29

11. Giant Size X-Men 1, 27

12. House of Secrets 88, 25

13. Amazing Spider-Man 136, 24

14. Defenders 10, 21

15. Conan Annual 1, 21

16. House of Mystery 236, 18

17. Detective Comics 423, 17

18. Superman 317, 17

19. House of Secrets 96, 16

20. Avengers 93, 16

21. Conan 20, 16

what, you didn't like my list?

The voting is taken from a electoral / survey style analysis which may place too much importance on a person's first choice

Now I understand, and it's logical to do it that way when voting, because essentially you vote ONCE for a leader, and are not allowed rate all of the candidates from 1 to 5. I've never gone to a polling booth and was asked "Give me your top 5 choices for Prime Minister/MP". insane.gif

I do appreciate the work you guys did, but I hope next time we pick a scoring format that at least fits the voting format.

893scratchchin-thumb.gif I think Conan 20 beats Avengers 93 (which didnt get a first) - and while I agree that the weighted system may be more representative further down the list when the voting is sparse - I still think a straight 5-4-3-2-1 weight problematic (It essentially counts two 3rds as being worth more than a 1st) had I set a weighted poll I would have ascribed values to the weights.

Yes, a better way would have been to have a larger spread in the weights to prevent something like that from happening.

One way might be to choose a series of prime numbers for the various weights: It does amplify the effect of the 1st place votes, and while it doesn't eliminate the possibility of ties, it does reduce their likelihood, since two lower-place votes would never exactly equal the value of a higher vote:

First place is worth 11

Second place is worth 7

Third place is worth 5

Fourth place is worth 3

Fifth place is worth 1

That said, it was a fun contest! Thanks Jason & Scott! thumbsup2.gif

Fibonacci would make more sense.

It's nice to see that the supposed iniquities of the scoring system generated almost as much debate as the contest itself. Pretty par for the course round here.

A big thumbsup2.gif to everybody who said thank you for the time that the organisers put in. As for the rest of you 893naughty-thumb.gif

Okay, since you think we're all talking about "supposed inequities", please tell me which of the following comics, A or B, you would rate higher:

Comic A only got a single guy voting for it, but he gave it a first, while Comic B received over 130,000 votes, but none of them were for first. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

It does appear that comic B was quite harshly treated. Can you point out exactly which issue this was on the final list?

Harshly treated? The question was which comic you would think would rate higher, and by effect, determine how accurate the format is.

So pick one and quit stalling.

How was that harsh. At least multiple people cared that it was a 2nd place cover. Book A was probably only voted on by the person who nominated it.

Does anyone have an extra copy of comic B? It must be really great for so many people to vote for it! acclaim.gif

I'll pick Comic A. My 36 million friends will pick comic B.

Your 'infinite' analogy is pointless. In fact, in your 'infinite' universe, there will so many 1st place votes around that the scoring system used will work perfectly. It's only in a world with fewer votes that it might appear to be less effective.

None of this takes away from your pedantry and boorishness in continuously harping on about the scoring, when it's obvious that the organisers have busted a gut for our pleasure. 893naughty-thumb.gif

Just for the record, I think it's interesting to compare last year's bronze cover poll with this one's. There are some significant differences. Last time I checked, these were the results:

1. Batman 227

2. Green Lantern / Green Arrow 76

3. Amazing Spider-man 122 (tie)

3. House of Secrets 92 (tie)

4. DC 100 Page Super Spectacular 4

5. Conan 1

6. Batman 251

7. Giant-Size X-Men 1

8. Superman 233

While I admit there are some flaws in the way I set the poll up, it's the same issues vying for top positions for the most part, but Conan 1's higher ranking last year is interesting.
