Do Modern Ripof...Errr "Recreation" of Past Covers Bother You?

69 posts in this topic

This was going on far before the Modern Age - Batman 227 anyone. Sometimes artists even rip themsleves off, if they are around long enough. Personally I like the homage cover, but the artist should definitely give PROPS to the person who original they are deriving inspiration from. sumo.gif

One more for you. Is it an homage or a rip-off...or a bit of both!

Bill Sienkiewicz, the master of the "lift" with a two-for with the same artist, C. Coles Philips and his "Fade-Away Girl" Note:Bill won an Eisner that year for "COVER OF THE YEAR AWARD! CLEVEREST USE OF COLOR EVER!" 893scratchchin-thumb.gif I wonder if he would have won if he gave props to C. Coles Philips for sparking his "creativity"

Well thats a little more subtle then most swipes. He is using the body positioning and color technique, but he has other elements in the art so its really hard to say that's a direct cover swipe - though its pretty clear he was inspired by the former artists work.

I think if every artist gave credit to their "swipes" there would be more words than art.
