Worth it?

27 posts in this topic

So here's another, "Is this worth it?" post. Here's the breakdown:

This guy has just under 1200 comics, (1149 to be exact) and he's looking to sell them. His price tag is $800 USD, but i said i wouldn't pay that. He lives in my hometown, so i'd be able to pick them up from, him and avoid shipping on the several longboxes he has. All the comics are from the last several years, but he says that they are ALL in NM condition - like new. Now he's offering them to me for $800 CDN (about $650 US) flat, if i pick them up.

To get to the point, i'll just post the list he sent me. He said there may be some books missing from the list, but this is the general idea.

As you can see, there are also a number of GNs in the bunch. At the $800 CDN price tag that he has it at, it comes out to about $0.70 CDN a book, or about $0.57 USD.

What do ya'll say? Worth it? Not? Should i try to get it down another couple cents per book?

Opinions, flames, and criticisms welcomed.

As soon as I read this part "He said there may be some books missing from the list, but this is the general idea." I didnt even look at the list. This gives the seller all rights to pull any good book he wants before you get them.

I wouldn't buy it unless they were all STRICT 9.4 or better, and I wouldn't pay that price even if they were. confused-smiley-013.gif Otherwise it just isn't worth the effort involved in selling them.

Are you looking to flip these or are they for your personal collection?

Yeah, what are the chances there is a NM ASM 300?

From seeing your list, no more than .05c each, scratch that, I would have no interest.

Unless they fit what you personally collect.

I recently bought huge runs of moderns for $1 a piece from a huge collection. Now, I didn't mind paying that because they were all NM, I was able to pick what I wanted and I will be reading them all.....one day. These were mostly runs from 1996 - 2002. Total quantities purchased were about 2000 or so.

I weighed the price against what it would have cost me to accumulate these from e-bay and/or LCS's.

On occasion, members of the forum offered huge runs of moderns for sale from collections they either had or were in the process of buying. I always offered $1 a comic and nobody was interested in pulling issues I wanted for that price mainly due to the work involved. Several said there was just no profit in it.

So, if anyone says I paid too much, they need to realize I tried getting them for that another way and it didn't work.

Now, although several of the runs I purchased sell routinely for less than a dollar an issue on e-bay many sell for much more.

The situation here is a bit different 'cause you can't pick and choose and many of the runs are incomplete. Possibley worth a bit more to you IF you plan on reading them. But remember, any fill-in issues you need you will pay quite a bit more. With not being able to pick the ones you want, I would want them for a lot less than .70 cents each.

I'd pay $50 to not own those comics.

Packing freebies, 50 cent longbox stuffers for neighborhood yard sale, or Halloween giveaways. Rest go to charity for cover price value tax deduction

Now I know what I'm getting in my next package from Darth. 893applaud-thumb.gif

$50. Or $51.25 if the longbox is in nice condition. insane.gif

Heh. It's funny that i dlso thought about the condition of the longboxes, and whether if they were in good condition, i'd save some money rather than buying new ones that i desperately need. I suppose that should have been my first sign NOT to buy.

Definitely not worth buying to resell. Not worth buying if you have no interest in half of them. Not worth buying unless they are all truly NM (or better). Not worth buying unless at least everything listed is included.

The average amount I've spent per comic since I got back in (mid '04) is a bit less than $1(cdn). That includes a little bit of duplication and stuff I don't really want/need, especially due to buying runs/small-medium size lots on eBay. However, for the most part that's stuff I've carefully picked and chosen and not common garbage that someone is trying to get rid of.
