I've never seen this before - there are fine color breaks on the very edge of the spine but they're not stress marks. A production issue that deserves some leniency?

Many modern books have "spine crack" -- a long vertical break that runs the length of the spine -- but this is typically due to the heavier, highly varnished paper stock used on modern covers. I've never seen this issue on Silver Age books.

 

I suspect what we are seeing is a reading crease caused by the cover being bent back. The crease happens to fall exactly on the spine because the staples are slightly to the rear.

 

Still a nice book - 7.0/7.5. thumbsup2.gif
