Why are Pages Trimmed?

Yeah, i know it's part of the "production process," but why trim only certain corners or, worse, cut off (seemingly) random sections of the border? Fortunately no art appears lost, but why do they do this dammit?! confused-smiley-013.gif

From what I understand, art was taped down to be photographed to make the printing plates. The art was then cut with an X-acto knife, rather than bother with removing the tape.

 

The procedure must have changed over the years, as I don't see any new art with this type of trimming.

 

Someone with more printing expertise please feel free to write in with corrections.

Nowadays the printer never sees the boards.It's all digital.

 

Actually, in most cases no one past the inker actually sees a piece of paper.
