Please help grade this Weird Science-Fantasy No.23 and No.26

8 posts in this topic

Hi everyone. I need some help grading some Weird Science-Fantasy's that I'm putting up for sale to the boards first but then probably Ebay.

This one is taxing my rookie grading skills. Here's my grading notes:

Cover is attached at both staples, slightly loose, has staining below the D in Weird down into the top right corner of art (kind of a "crusty" type stain), a 1/4" tear top, otherwise minor wear and creasing. Spine is solid with minor to moderate edge wear and has a 3/4" vertical spine split at bottom. Back cover has light soiling and some minor chips and tears at left edge. Pages are pretty even in color, a cream/light tan? Centerfold is attached, a 3-1/2" tear in the right edge of one page, and what look to me as some bindery/printing chips/damage to the lower right corners of a few pages.

First question: Can anyone help me with grading page coloring? I strugle with this most, is there any online guides for this?

OK, here's my grade because of the cover staining and inside tear I grade it a 3.0

I look forward to your opinions thumbsup2.gif

Hmmm, having a hard time between 3.5 and 4.0. I think its definetly beter than a 3.0. The spine isn't trashed at least.

My purchase notes I'd given it a 4.0 ? It's the stain that bugs me, it's that crusty type like something was smeared on it. I'd love to try to wipe it off 893naughty-thumb.gif but the next owner can decide on that. Always love your comments thumbsup2.gif

I'm also adding Weird Science No.26 to this post since it's pretty low grade, let me know what you guys grade it, thanks!

My grading notes:

Cover still has some gloss but tanning and soiled/foxing. Cover is detached at top staple. Back cover has stain/spot at top and soiled. Spine is thinning with flaking, tiny pieces out, and maybe splitting beginning. Inside covers are tanning. Pages have soiling and are light to dark tan but supple. Centerfold is attached.

I thinking 2.5 or 2.0 confused.gif

Not a 2.0. I'd say this would be a good example of a 3.0.

When 2.0's have damage similar to this, it is usually pretty evident. This book holds it's eye appeal pretty well since the water damage is on the back. A 2.0 would have the water damage on the front.

Again, thanks for your comments! I don't think the scan is showing the spine edge very well. In your hand it's worse, and for me what keeps me from going higher.

I've got a TOS 39 that has much worse water damage to it with a 3.0 universal on it. I think it's closer to a 3.5
