Regardless, I've never agreed with CGC's stance on production defects. Before they showed up production defects were always factored into the overall grade by the dealers I dealt with.

Maybe for the dealers you worked with, but certainly not all dealers were that way. (Frankly, before CGC, most dealers I dealt with were of the "If it's glossy, it's MINT!!!!" variety.) But anyway, I know a lot of the major dealers before CGC treated production defects differently than they treated handling defects. This is even borne out by the first edition of the Overstreet grading guide from 1992.
