RAREST book?

40 posts in this topic

I've heard for years that Action Comics #1 has around 75 copies still known to exist. Are there any books that are rarer, and how many existing copies are there3 of them about?

are there any books we historicly know existed, but no copies have ever been found?

The rarest comicbook I know of is Famous Funnies Series 1 with 4 known copies.

It is the first modern comicbook ever sold.So its a key book too!

It is a Gerber 10.

I believe it is the only KEY book to be a 10 in the Gerber guide.

893applaud-thumb.gif What's Freihofer’s Comic Book or Toy World Funnies?

Maybe someday a Platinum Age / Victorian Age Photo Journal will be made.

Toy World Funnies 1933 a rare variation of Funnies on Parade/Century of Comics contents.

This spawns a couple of intersting questions.

Not including the Platinum Age "book" stuff sold at bookstores... I'm talking comic magazines sold from newsstands... so no obscure promo books like EC's Desert Dawn, etc., only honest to goodness comics that were sold to the public from newsstands (so no Ash Cans either!):

What are the top 10 rarest newsstand comic books?

What is the rarest newsstand comic book from each publisher?

I have in the past brought unknown comics to Overstreet's attention before they are listed in the guide. Mostly I did this during the early years of the guide. Even now and then I still come across ones that are not listed. Some of these books I may never see again owned by someone else. But does that mean they are rare? I don't know? A lot has to do with demand. The way I see it is the more people want the book, makes it rarer. So what if there's one copy of a comic that no one is interested in. Or no more copies around. Should they even bother to note them in a guide? Maybe have a "known to exist" or "no longer in existance" mentioned by the book when in the OS. Or maybe not even mention the book unless its something in demand. Because there sure are a lot of rare comics out there. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

List by demand eh? I don't go for that at all because you get to the point were demand gets centred only on the books that "always" have demand. Sometimes just listing a book even if it is only known to have been published is enough for some people to set out on a venture to track it down.

If you went by demand a whole lot of books would be excluded from the guide. With no one technically tracking the value of the books it makes it hard for collectors to determine prices they want to pay. Besides there are alot of book that are truly rare in the guide that don't appear to have any "demand" simply because the people who own them are not interested in selling them or the books are so rare that sales may come once in a very long long time.

Even though I don't partake in th erae comic market I do like reading about it and keeping track as much as I can what happens. I have a great appreciation for trying to bring to the attention these rare itmes so in hopes that someone else hears about it and, perhaps, saves one of these from being (further) destroyed.

As for the rarest regular comics:

I would render a guess that from DC New Fun #2 and one of those early annuals would top their list. I don't think DC even had archive copies of their first books.

Centaur .... probably the first issue (#6 or is it five) of Amazing Man would be near the top of the list
