Yeah tried that unfortunately none that matched mine. i have seen a ASM and a Capt. Am. a couple of years ago that were 30 cent variants in F and sold for 200 plus dollars. But haven't seen any sales of the ones I have.

The variant 'craze' has in fact cooled off quite a bit, and most do not bring huge premiums any more unless they are in high grade. I wouldn't expect too much for your mid-grade copies.

What planet was this on? 893whatthe.gif

35-centers maybe, but I've never heard of F copies of 30-cent superhero books like this hitting $200 or more. screwy.gif

I always heard that 30 centers sold for just as much $$$ as 35 centers back in the day before people made their complete sets. Is this not true?

Not the books he's talking about. 30-centers are much more common, so only the few, very rare issues ever sold for that much.

Other than ultra-HG X-Men or Spidey ones of course.

That is not true. True, there was a time when 30¢-ers brought crazy prices in mid-grade but not like the 35¢-ers. In fact I still hold the record on a few issues -- all in the raw (pre-CGC) FN and VF range.

I forget who told me that, before I got into it. Did common 30 centers ever crack $100 back in late 90s and early 2000's?

What records do you hold?

That really doesn't seem to be too far off what they would sell for today. Had anyone completed a set at that point in time? HOw did you sell, all at the same time or break them out 10-20 a week?

I wish I would have kept my numbers when we found all those 35 centers tonofbricks.gif

At that time I don't think anyone had put together a full set. Donut may have finished his but only a month or so earlier. My collection was probably the 3rd largest (behind Dount and SilverBronze).

Somone had just finished a bunch of auctions the week before that brought in some crazy numbers. Lighthouse called me and asked if I had seen the final bids -- we were both shocked. So that night I put all of my books (minus the Avengers and X-Men) up on eBay hoping to catch some of the 2nd place finishers. I probably had less than $300 tied up in them so cashing out (since I still needed ~50 of the hardest books) was a no brainer. The final total came out to just ove $3000.

Four years later, in a twist of cosmic fate, Glenn Malloy (Gem4works) was looking for a Kid Colt #203 to complete his set. I dug back through all of my old records and found the email address for the guy I sold it to. He and Glenn were able to make a deal and Glenn finally got to finish his set.

I remember Glenn. Somehow he got in touch with me and wanted to buy all 200+ 35 centers sight unseen for like $35 each. Seemed like an ok deal to me, but after thinking about we decided not to sell like that. Which ended up being a very smart decision.

So what sparked the 35 cent craze? Just a few guys finishing up 30 centers and moving forward? I seem to recall that we had quite a few that had never been seen before. So we must have caught the tale end of crazy prices.

So what sparked the 35 cent craze?

The "craze" started because these are the rarest Bronze Age comics and the last true variants. In terms of price changes, there are really two different things going on:

1) Key issue and popular comics, which are even more valuable in their 35-cent variant form. This "craze" is still going on today, and toss up an Iron Fist 14, Stars Wars #1 or X-men 105 35-center and watch the bids fly.

2) The "rarer" 35-cent variants, that are virtually worthless on their 30-cent form, were in heavy demand by a few "variant completists", but as more copies came to light and Cosmic finished his set, demand had died down considerably.

Basically, it comes down to how large your target market is, as the $$$ fall-off is relative to that.
