CGC Census - Toughest 9.8s for Copper Age

87 posts in this topic

For the list you already accumulated, you would look each one up on GPA and match them up. That would take a while. The Turtles #1 is obvious 9.2 or higher, the Vampirella 113 9.2 or higher, Daredevil 165 166 in 9.6 higher, 168 9.2 or higher, Star Wars 107 9.4 or higher, Transformers 80 9.2 or higher. Some have very little activity in the past 12 months and prices swing up and down signifignatly.

The lone Fantastic Four #214 CGC 9.8 (Torch cover) was owned by the Beyonder and if I recall correctly but was damaged in the slabb during delivery a few years back so actually there are no CGC 9.8's for this issue.

I think he would have to send the label in to CGC in order to get the book removed from the census.

Seller requested I send the book back to CGC to see if they could "fix it". Book was sent to CGC.....and shortly thereafter the seller issued me a refund. Whether or not the book was fixed remains to be seen......

V,

It seems all the big books from the Copper age are there on the list, including such firm favourites as Hulk #340 (an example of a book that every man and his dog bought!).

It seems more that books that are favoured are being submitted in numbers, and exhibiting typical standard deviation spreads particularly as we move towards the bottom of the list.

Probably the only prominent information we can take from the list so far would be the top 15 or so books.

But for the rest, i would say it's all simply down to the fact that it is not worth submitting a CA book unless it's worth something in particular, and you believe it's a strong contender for the 9.4+ grade result.

So those factors will always be strong for quite a number of years to come as CA flounders with the extreme's of TMNT vs the rest of them in $ terms.

Very good points...

In any list of Copper Age where the minimum number of submissions is 50 (or even 20),

we have immediately filtered out any Copper Age book that is "relatively unimportant" to collectors.

One of the things that people don't normally see in the CGC Census is the fact that

most EXISTING copies of Modern/Copper books are NOT 9.8. Judging from the census,

it would be easy to conclude that 9.8 is "easy" for these books, regardless of publisher.

In reality, the key books are a better demonstration of the actual conditions of raw books in the market.

There's just no incentive for "average copies" of most Modern/Copper books to be slabbed,

so the census reflects the "best of the best", not the "normal situation".

For example, the average slabbed grade for Marvel books from 1982

for books which have 1 to 25 copies on the CGC census is 9.55.

That probably sounds about right to most collectors...

Marvel books from 1982 have been generally well-protected,

it's probably easy to find raw books in the 9.55 range...

probably "about average" for unslabbed books from this timeframe.

But, that's just not reality... watch what happens as the sample size increases...

The average slabbed grade for Marvel books from 1982 for books

with 26 to 100 copies on the CGC census is 9.46.

The average slabbed grade for Marvel books from 1982 for books

with 100 or more copies on the CGC census is 9.24...

while the average slabbed grade for Marvel books from 1982 for books

with 500 or more copies on the CGC census is 9.13.

So... if you wanted to estimate the "average condition" of UNGRADED Marvel books from 1982,

what grade estimate would you apply to all those raw books out there in the world?

I would say that 9.13 is the closest to the "average condition" of UNGRADED Marvel books from 1982.

In fact, 9.13 is probably too high, because we're talking about books that were deemed "slab-worthy"

by someone at some time... by default, those books are already "better than average"

because people don't slab every copy of a book, they slab their best.

(I just picked Marvel 1982 at random... we could use any publisher/year combo.)

Books which are graded the most often have the best chance of having a better

cross-section of the ACTUAL normal grades in existence... which is why books with the most

copies on the census are also averaging the lowest overall grade.

The real question is... how many RAW books are being claimed to be 9.4 or 9.6,

but in reality are "about average", and much closer to 9.13 than the seller would admit?

How many collectors who "don't need CGC" are paying raw 9.4 and 9.6 prices for raw 9.13 books?

The statistics say that the "average raw copy" isn't as good as collectors might think.

The 1982 average grade is most likely to fall between 8.0 and 9.0, based on the above data. I'd wager 8.7 or so.

The 9.13 average comes from a biased sample. The sample average is skewed by the fact that these are the copies deemed gradeable.

The sample is likely also biased by the fact that the >500 1982 submitted books are the more valuable ones and have probably been cared for much better on average than common books.

Oh, and (worship) for the data collection.

The average grade of common Marvel comics that are still around from the year 1982 would be in the 8.0 to 9.0 range. Gravity has taken its toll, poor storage, people actually read some of them. I've looked at thousands of books either in dealer warehouse stock, or collector collections. It is possible to find a personal collector who did pack and preserve there comics to an average of 9.0-9.4, but that number is in minority. The average grade is vf for most books I see that are 25 years old.
