San Diego Comic Con International Signature Series Opportunities

San Diego Comic-Con International (July 20 – 23) is the big daddy of comic book conventions and the Mecca for genre fans and collectors. Everyone has to experience the SDCCI at least once in his or her life! And this year will be no exception, as comic creators will also be flocking to San Diego for the biggest comic book party of the year. My only concern with SDCCI is that it is hard to figure out who will actually be there as the convention has only a few dozen or so Special Guests that get featured on the SDCCI Web site. Other pros will be based in artist's alley or the guest area, but even more will be based out of the company booths, where they are sponsored by their publishers — and nearly every publisher in comic books will be present. I work under the assumption that just about everyone will be there and work my way down.

 

SDCCI is also a tougher show for Signature Series than some other events, as the sheer size makes it tough to plan properly. You could be halfway across the room from your home base and encounter that tough-to-find creator and not have your books — then you have to fight your way across the room to get your books and hope the creator doesn't leave in the 45 minutes it takes for you to get your books and get back. Not impossible, but pretty close! Always check the schedules for panels and the signing schedules at the publisher booths! STERANKO MAKES SURPRISE APPEARANCE @ SDCC

The escape artist turned legendary Marvel comics artist, musician, illustrator, author, publisher, and filmmaker, Jim Steranko, hasn't appeared at the San Diego Comic-Con in years!

 

Steranko has inspired millions including author Michael Chabon who cited Steranko as the inspiration for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel character Joe Kavalier and comics legend, Jack Kirby, who created his famous character and comic book, Mister Miracle based on Steranko! As a filmmaker, Steranko has collaborated with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Francis Ford Coppola on some of their most popular movies.

 

Steranko will make a surprise appearance at this year's Comic-Con International in San Diego to premier the 2007 Steranko Art Calendar at the Vanguard Productions booth 1706. Other recent Steranko projects include Domino Lady: The Complete Collection (Vanguard), The Discovery Channel's Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked documentary, and writing a recent episode of Cartoon Network's Justice League series.

 

Steranko has been cited as one of the top 5 greatest comic-book art innovators of all-time by Wizard magazine, and has been likewise recognized by America's Smithsonian Institute and France's world-famous Louvre Museum. Although I'd like to get Bolland to sign Joker's Last Laugh #1 I didn't have a copy laying around. I figured I wouldn't bother trying to go through the hassle of getting that done becuase I want to focus on some of the older guys there. I'm hoping that my Detective 69 and 71 will be done be Robinson becuase for me personally nothing can top that. Not even any artists who have passed away. I'm also hoping to get Luis Dominguez to sign one of my favorite covers as he is quite old. BTW if anyone does happen to have a HG copy of Joker's Last Laugh # 1 (Yes Last Laugh and not Killing Joke) and gets it autographed by him for SS I would be more than happy to purchase the book from you.
