OK, I found about 9 pieces of property that matched my first and last name and 2 with the same middle initial. What's the legality of claiming property like this if it's not yours? Can you be hit with years of property taxes or later sued for fraud?

You should pursue it if the names and adresses match. They will not release the funds unless you provide proof and you have to sign forms that will be sent to you through the mail.
