this is a good discussion of the Silver Age Pedigrees.

 

Just to give a little background, a pedigree is usually a collection of high grade books, be it DC, Marvel, whatever. The books were bought by a single collector bought new off the stands and are of high grade. Keys are usually present and needed to be considered a pedigree. Most, not all, were started before colelcting comics became a large hobby. So, many pedigrees start in the early 60's when superhero books were getting going again.

Again, these are just generalities.
