New Comic prices!

47 posts in this topic

To hazard a guess, $1.50 would be the standard cost of an average monthly today, if they were printed on the same paper stock.

But remember that paper makes up only a small part of the cover price, and I guarantee that creator revenues and comic shop profits are the two major perps when it comes to cover prices.

Drop back the paper quality and Bendis still needs a paycheck and royalties, and your LCS still needs its cut, so with current microscopic print runs on most books, I can't even imagine $1.50 as a cover price.

I vote cheap newsprint again with reasonable prices.....comics were priced low for a reason back in the day.....I might even start buying moderns again.

I wouldn't want to go all the way back to cheap 70s style newsprint - but the better paper quality with a matte finish that was popular in the late 80s is preferred to the slick paper of today - I'm also not fond of the "painted" coloring found in many current books - sometimes it's done well, but usually not.

I really like the 70's style comics and the paper they were printed on. FANTASTIC!

I like the paper stock for comics that were printed in the 70's.

Me too, and when they changed to that ultra-white paper in the mid to late-80's, it produced a terrible coloring effect (like a cheap paint-by-numbers kit), and it crops up on many TPBs as well.

I still prefer the look of comic artwork on newsprint.

Most shops work on a 40 to 45% discount.

A $3.00 cover breaks down approx. like this

Shop pays $1.65. If they sell-out at no discount, they make $1.35 a book. They are stuck with any unsold books.

Diamond has different deals with different publishers. They pretty much just pass DC books along at a fixed amount for each book they handle, other publishers give about a 60% discount.

Publisher sells a $3.00 comic for around $1.00. Out of that comes all costs associated with creating and printing the book, then getting it to Diamond.

Publisher sells a $3.00 comic for around $1.00.

Exactly, so 2/3 of a comic book's price is not even associated with Marvel, printing or employee/royalty expenses.

So if they lowered paper quality, a $3.00 comic would probably sell for $2.90.

Scary numbers, both price and estimated sales! All because those darn freeloaders keep getting their fix at the local library and not the LCS,,,,,only kidding!!!! grin.gif

I liked it too. I find the glossy pages difficult to read in some types of light because of the glare.

If you 'haven't seen the free Spideys that newspapers are giving away, they are on the cheapest paper I've ever seen.Terrible is too nice a word.

Most of the reason comics are so much is that Geppi wants them to be.He needs to make a certain profit per book, and as time goes by,he seems to want more and more per book.

wow Shad, I cant believe you wrote that!

Its Geppi's fault? Geppi/Diamond is only the sales agent for DC and the rest. He doesnt even buy the comics from them. He handles them and takes a fee from the sales. He's like an employee, or a freelancer. Thts changed back during the distributor wars of the 90s after Marvekl bought Heroes World and went direct (leaving Diamond in the process). In signing DC and others to exclusive distribution contracts, their arrangement changed to that of sales agent, not the typical distributor who actually owns the merchandise. Geppi's upside became limited, but his downside was protected. And he had no choice in the matter. Levitz/DC realized they were calling the shots! (Levitz even bragged to his Warners bosses about what a sweet deal he had made in a secret memo that was leaked to Comics Journal.

And whatever gave you the idea that Geppi tells publishers what to charge for a cover price?

Quite frankly,I put a great deal of the blame on the current state of the market on Geppi. I do,indeed.

As the exclusive distributor for DC and Marvel,he has stood in the way of many attempts to restart newstand distribution,he has steadily refused to allow any sort of advertising co-op deals,he has dictated the prices of many independant companies, and much more. When an idea was floated a few years ago for a company that wanted to publish monthly comics at $1.00,it was shot down. There wasn't enough profit in it for him.

As for that memo,so what? Ron Perlman bragged about the sweet deal he got from the Snyders for Heroes World, and we all know how well that worked out.Don't forget, part of the Diamond/DC agreement was an option for Warner to buy Geppi out after a few years. Never happened, did it? Don't you think it would have if the deal favored TW?

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

As you say,Geppi has completely protected his downside, leaving all the risk to the publishers and the store-owners.Most of whom are,in reality, little more than unpaid Diamond employees.

I don't follow that part of your argument. If Geppi's operation is such a cash cow, wouldn't Warners want to add it to their balance sheet? On the other hand, if the status quo deal favors Warners, then I can certainly see why they would never exercise an option that would rock their boat. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

271 Veronica 172 $2.25 Archie 2,300

272 Archie & Friends 102 $2.25 Archie 2,300

300 Jughead 175 $2.25 Archie 1,700

Poor Jughead,,,I almost want to go out and buy a copy. It's funny for a few months ago many Grocery stores in the area had comics in the magazine section. Now if they have any they are Archie books, yet they always have such low numbers.

The chart posted only counts direct market sales and therefore does not include grocery stores sales, which we have to presume swell up those Archie numbers.

But I never said Diamond was a cash cow,did I?What I said was that they were greatly responsible for the current woeful state of the market. Two very different statements, not related to one another.

DCs deal with Diamond worked great for DC,better for Geppi. It effectively eliminated all of Diamonds competitors and gave Diamond the chance to dictate whatever terms it wanted to the thousands of stores depending on the product he had and they needed.

In 1988,my two stores bought on a 52.5 % discount, with free in-store delivery. We also had several hundred dollars a quarter in co-op advertising.Heroes World became the Marvel distributor and my discount dropped to 45%,due to the loss of volume.I realized I couldn't succeed under such conditions and sold out.Within two years,my former employee was getting books at 43%,even though Marvel was back at Diamond.Plus, now stores paid for shipping, another $50 plus a week out of pocket.

But I digress.

Warner is a publisher, not a magazine distributor. They have a nice deal going and I can see why they would choose not to take over a business like Diamond. I suspect Marvel would be looking very hard into the legal ramifications of their largest competitor becoming their distributor as well.

Zonker made my first point for me. As for your comment on his comment, Warners hasnt exercized their option because its such small potatoes in the wake of TimeWarners current woes. I think they already have a book distribution wing, too, but comics is so small why not just let Geppi run it and ship their books and collect their money for them?

I agree that it was unfair for Geppi to start charging for shipping once retailers had no choice. But, again, I dont think he made any moves back then without saying "May I" first. Geppi had suddenly gotten HIS share reduced to a fee % of sales. Before that, he gave free shippping because he was GETTING more. DC changed the terms, keeping more for themselves - - -OUT OF DIAMONDS TAKE! So Geppi couldnt throw in free shipping anymore.
