Collection Gone - Top Ten Reacquires?

49 posts in this topic

Great idea for a thread, BTW. thumbsup2.gif

Top ten replacements, in no particular order, and why…

Avengers #66 – first comic I ever bought at the newsstand

X-Men #58 – best Neal Adams cover. Ever.

ASM #121 – the end of the age of my comic innocence

Avengers #52 – John Buscema in his prime, with a cover that always jumps out of any wall display

ASM #86 – the debut of the ‘new, improved Black Widow’, the sexiest woman in comics. Ever.

FF #57 – possibly the best FF/Doom/Surfer story written

Strange Tales #167 – tough call which of the ground-breaking Steranko issues to choose, but this gets the nod because of the iconic cover

TTA #100 – one the greatest battle issues ever, and one that I can vividly remember reading as a kid

Avengers #71 – great storyline and for a kid new to comics, all of these old characters seemed to be giants from out of time

TTA #58 – this book with its, quite frankly, weird cover and story, just about sums up the whole feel of the heyday of 60s Marvel

Great first post!

Even though I have some much nicer comics now, the first books I would reacquire are the oddball ones that I cherish the most from my childhood. These books aren't much to speak of from a collecting point of view, but I would gladly pay the paltry sums to acquire them before moving on to heavy hitters. These are books that really make my collection mine.

Transformers #70

Transformers #75

Transformers #80

X-Men (1992) #1 Beast cover

X-Men (1992) #25

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi #1

Star Wars: Redemption #5

X-Men (1963) #50 (best comic cover ever!)

X-Men (1963) #14

Fell #1

neat question. smile.gif

I'd have to say...

1) Daredevil #1 - I worked HARD to get that collection together - definitely my first reacquire.

2) Sandman #1 - the Gaiman version - lots of memories wrapped up in this series

3) Grendel #1 - it's a tossup b/t this and Primer 2, but I think I like the story in #1 better, plus, it's all Grendel!

4) Local #3 - Not worth anything at all, but Brian Wood's one of my favorites, and Local #3 did an amazing job of fusing together two things that I really like - comics & music!

5) Nick Fury #1 - The #4 cover is probably more recognizable, but #1 is readable by itself. mmm... Steranko. smile.gif

6) Magnus: Robot Fighter #12 - The Valiant version. This story is self-contained enough to make it readable on its own. I loved the intro of Turok, and this issue was a great lead-in to Unity. All-in-all, it was really just a fun book.

7) Daredevil #7 - Red costume, Wally Wood... you all know. smile.gif

8) Marvel Spotlight #2 - First Werewolf, Mike Ploog art, and a really fun story to boot. Sweet!

9) Tomb of Dracula #1 - ToD was a great series... even before Wolfman came aboard, I really dug it. There are probably better issues, but #1 would definitely be on the replace list.

10) American Flagg #1 - Howard Chaykin at his best

Honorable Mentions would have been The Shadow #1 (Kaluta), Swamp Thing #1 (Wein/Wrightson), Judge Dredd #1 (Eagle Comics)... probably some others I'm forgetting... some Miller DD's, perhaps. And, if we used TPB's, Brian Wood's Channel Zero, definitely. Sandman's Season of Mists would probably make it too.

Some of my favorite comics from my collection are somewhat irreplaceable. So I couldn't really reacquire them.

Two GA Joker covers from an original owner collection and five pre-production Crossgen comics that I haven't seen anywhere else.

To round it out to ten, here are three other favorites that are replaceable.

Adventure 433 CGC 9.6

Digital Webbing Presents #5 signed by Eric Powell

Marvel Spotlight 2 CGC 9.0 (from Steve Sibra)

I'm giving this thread a bumpit.gif. It was helping me to know what forumites collected what. So here is the restated premise:

Your collection is gone, for good. What are the top ten comics that you would reacquire? Remember, if it was a one of a kind, that particular copy can't be replaced (pedigree, childhood copy, etc.).

Conan the barbarian #23 ( 1st app. Red Sonja - obsession begins )

Conan the barbarian #24 ( 1st full app. Red Sonja )

Marvel Feature #1 ( pattern? )

Nickel Comics #1 ( the good life )

I Heart NY ( sentimental piece )

Cyblade/Shi #1 ( 1st app. Witchblade )

True Story Swear to God #1 ( irreplaceable gift )

Batman : Realworlds ( 1st book to make me upset )

Marvel Feature #3 ( irreplacable - was a gift from someone special )

Dream of Dawn #1/2 ( irreplacable - gift )

I have a pretty insignificant collection but obsession is good.

Amazing Adventures 11

Daredevil 131

Hero for Hire 1

Incredible Hulk 180

Iron Fist 14

Iron Man 55

Marvel Premiere 15

Special Marvel Edition 15

Tomb of Dracula 10

Werewolf By Night 32

Nothing to crazy here. Pretty bland actually as far as comics go. All bronze 1st appearances, but I had to leave a few off to keep it at ten. Oh, and a minimum grade of 9.4.

I had trouble narrowing it down to ten so I just chose my favorite time period (bronze), and then my ten favorite characters from that period that I have in cgc 9.4 or better.

I could do separate top tens for silver and copper, but I can't make an overall top ten with any real certainty.

Getting my top 10 books back, after all my copies going south...far too depressing to contemplate.

I'd just track down a complete run of Vertigo Sandman, and leave it at that.

ok...and maybe...because I know I'd crack on the above,

TTA#93

Surfer #4

FF #48-50

NF #1, #4

Avengers #57 (don't currently have one...but intending)

Strange Tales #135

Sandman #8 ..editorial variant. 9.6 just like the one I have now cloud9.gif
